Tell him to do both, You are only a Freshman and going to High School once. You don't get a second chance to do it all over again.

Have him explain to the coach, who should understand.

We have several players on our local HS baseball team that play in the HS band.

I would be more concerned about the effect on the grades. May have to work a little harder on the studies.

My son plays the Bass guitar too.

I have found that the teens when they are into what they like they do not let the grades slip--if anything they are better during the seaosns involved.
