Heard a Division I coach talk about tools for the college Division I prospect and found it interesting as to how many tools he felt he needed to see to make that player interesting to him
What are your thoughts?

I think it would be nice if you finished your thought and told us how many tools the D1 coach was interested in. Still more interesting would be a sorted list in priority order of the tools said D1 coach is interested in.
TR....I'm guessing that the tools he wants to prioritize differs from position to position....but the number.....well minimum 4....with the 5th coachable/trainable.....so now tell us....what did he say?
I'm going to offer a guess of 1-2 tools. Now of course, that would depend on if this coach was from a top school or not, he might be looking at a 3 tool guy.
I would think a true 5 tool player would be drafted in the first round, and a 4-5 tool player would follow right on his heals.

1-2 outstanding tools of which 1 will be a big bat and top schools 2 minimum including a big bat.

I can tell you that the answer would vary greatly depending on the program. I'd say Canisius or St. Peter's would be very interested in many players that a Texas or Tulane wouldn't give the time of day to.

If we're just talking about a player being "interesting" to him which I take to mean one that the coach would follow, not necessarily recruit - I would have to agree with the others and say a big bat. Kids that hit will usually get looks.

As far as physical tools, position players are graded on Average/Defense/Power/Arm/Speed which are prioritized by position. Therfore, position will dictate what tools are of greatest importance/interest to a coach.

This coach looks for hitting first and speed second
He wont turn down a 4 or 5 tool kid but his feeling is that most 4 and 5 tool kids are looking to go pro so why chase them
He feels that pitchers will be 85 mph pitchers at best and he can make them better.
Speed relates to good defense and he likes that
The point is that to play college baseball you dont necessarily have to be a "stud"

Thanks TR - it's always interesting to hear coach's and scout's views on things. I think most coaches probably would agree with what he told you.
