WOW! That's a big fish. That reminds me of the time when I was playing in the Florida State League. I "manufactured" one of my patented rainouts, rented a fishing boat, and took a couple of my pitchers out there with me. As we were sitting there talking the trade of pitching, I hook on to this massive Blue Marlin...it was awesome.

After about 2 hours of reeling it in I let it go. Then that darn fish has the nerve to not even thank me. So I yelled at him, "when I give you gift you better say thank you! You don't just swim away from me dummy!"

Fish...what a strange creature!
I'm new to this site, but the reason that I started reading these posts was because I have a freshman playing baseball and decided that this would be a good way to learn about baseball in the area. I would think that a lot of people join for the same reason. It's very obvious that some of you don't care to hear about how the freshman or JV players are performing. That's fine, but I'm interested in hearing about different freshman and JV players and how the teams are performing (as NTX baseball123 said, they don't have to be varsity players).
Salt -- welcome to the site. If you had been here a while you'd know that this topic has a rich history. You can search for similar discussions within the past few months. At times, the more cynical posters believe this to be a self-promoting discussion ---- that's why I joked about my son (which I have tried to avoid over the years). We have no problems with discussing young players. In this case, you arrived at a somewhat awkward time as it relates to another talk about FRESHMEN. If you do a little research, you'll find the names.

And I'm all in favor of promoting great HS baseball players here -- no matter their age or grade.

Again...welcome!

Cool

Salt, Im kinda like you in wondering why this is such a taboo subject. I understand most all the longtime members have older kids but this is a highschool website, not a senior/junior only website.

I could totally be out of place, but if I am just set me straight, maybe there is a good reason not to talk about freshman, that I don't know about. This topic was brought up a little while ago and just swept under the table, just don't understand why.
Stop being silly. This comes up time and time again as those of us who have underclassmen would like to join and contribute to the board. Stop being so threatened. Yes we know our 15 year-olds are not at the same level as juniors and seniors, but they are out there, and alot are making impacts on their teams. So i will bravely go where no one else will go. Here is a list of freshman i have seen play this year who are impacting the teams they are on:

jared pruett- faith christian school varsity
cole fiola- guyer high school varsity
dane evans- sanger high school varsity
dalton brown- ponder high school varsity
lance cullum- guyer freshman team
isaack lopez- guyer freshman team
ben sego- carroll jv
kyle metzger-carroll jv

So there you go. My car didn't turn into a pumpkin, i didn't melt, it is safe to go in the water. Now follow up other freshman parents- and give small accolades where they are due.
Just to lend some encouragement to any newbies (moms or dads Wink)....my first post 3 years ago was on the topic of top north texas freshmen. (PD was still under 1,000 posts back then Big Grin) It is fun to look back at that thread and see the names and realize that many of those mentioned in that thread are headed to D1's to play baseball next year. On the other hand, there are others I never saw or heard of over the past 3 years. I think many of us (spectators) are good at identifying talent when we see it but you never know what can happen over the course of time....there are many factors...talent, luck, injury, passion that can affect how long a player is in the game or how well a player pans out.

You could not be more correct in your statement cheapseats. Alot happens between 14/15 and 18. Girls, academics, development, injuries, etc, etc, etc. It is encouraging to hear that many of those names you were hearing when your ballplayer was a freshman continued along the same path of excellence and achieved the goals of their childhood. I hope my son follows in those footsteps during the next 5 years. Still- its ok to say that for now these freshmen are impacting and acheiving what most of them have been working towards since tee-ball.
Good list, I've seen several of these kids play this year (and all of them many times over the years). Here are a few that I know are having a good year:

Brandon Courville - Marcus Freshman
Andrew Vinson - Flower Mound Freshman
Conner Foltyn - Coppell Freshman

...and four that I have not seen this year but would bet they are doing well (any news?):

Jerad Wilson
Jovan Hernandez
Trooper Reynolds
Dalton Brown

Dalton is probably the best of the 15 year olds that I have seen play. I admit that I may be a little biased since I know what a great kid he is.

Okay, I'm going to wade the murky waters that few have ventured before me...

I'd like to take this opportunity to appolgise to a certain Heath family for my attempts to embarrass them in this forum. At times I thought I was just being witty and sophmoric but on some days I was just mean spirited. My intentions were vendictive as I was trying to get even for wrongs I felt were done to my family in the past. Trying to even the score wasn't right, and doing it here, in this public forum, was even worse. Please accept my appology.

I'm in the book if you want to talk to me personally or you can shoot me a Private Message.

Does anyone attend the freshman games?
Just kidding, of course.

In Rockwall, I know of 4 freshmen playing
at the varsity level having various levels of
success. But hey, their coaches think enough of
them to have them on the varsity.

Rockwall HS - Spencer Edwards, Steve Bean
Rockwall-Heath - Jake Thompson, Jovan Hernandez

All get playing time.

Rock Dad -- Coach Payne has the guys playing great -- I think he was sandbagging a little at East in the preseason. It would take a swami to predict their great start.....and I know RD_son has been a huge contributor. Keep it going, Jackets!

Cool

Texas Crude -- classy post -- I've been around a few months and you don't see many apologies here. I appreciate your willingness to make things right. So, do I look under "C" in the book?

CS -- you know you're my favorite poster. But shhhh!

A three smiley post -- impressive, eh?
Garland creeks pretty dry, no big fish right now. Have heard about the Rockwall-Heath fish. Now that's a stud fish and sounds like he deserves being on varsity.

Like others have posted, what about any sophomores out there? Seems like they always get lost in the mix. I know that there are some on the JV in Rowlett that will move up next year and will have an impact on their team. Any others?
I believe a few things have contributed to this phenomenon -- 1) rules changes in the schools that allow freshmen to play varsity, and 2) the strength of the summer programs. When my oldest (2000 grad) was in HS, there were no/few/VERY few freshmen playing at the varsity level. They could not play V in Plano. I believe the trend will continue.

Based on posts from this and other sites, I've counted 25 freshman players starting or contributing to their varsity teams.

Yes, it seems that they are more than usual. There are ALWAYS politics involved in some of these fish, but most have proved they are deserving. However, when a freshman that is not any better than others on the team is playing over upperclass players, everyone knows it's politics. If the fish is better and is a stud, then go for it!! If only there were no politics in baseball! Good Luck to all!

How long ago was the rule about freshmen not playing on varsity?

In our area, the large suburban districts have added numerous high schools in recent years and the baseball players get spread out. There are now more chances for talented underclassmen to compete for a varsity spot.

I doubt the overall talent level is much different from previous years. There are natural variances in which some years will have a few more freshmen capable of competing on varsity. It seems there are now more chances for these variances to align with older classes not stacked with talent and that are diluted across more schools.
