Ribault High School senior Gregory Green died Saturday, three days after being struck in the head by a baseball while pitching behind a screen during batting practice.

Green, 17, played second base for the Trojans baseball team and was second in command in the school's Marine Corps Junior ROTC program.

Ribault principal James Young said the ball hit the metal frame of the screen, ricocheted and then struck Green in the head as he was in the process of ducking behind the protective netting.

Young said the incident occurred on campus. After being struck, Green was transported to Shands Jacksonville.

My prayers go out to Gregory Green's family. Pitching batting practice behind a screen just isn't something I think of as dangerous. I plan to print this out and show to my husband and son. The kids at his school throw BP without helmets all of the time. Right now they practice unattended, as it is fall and they do not yet have a varsity coach.
