Can someone tell me what to expect (in the context of training) for an incoming freshman baseball player? Does the coach send you a summer workout routine, and suggested diet? I'll make the assumption that most players will play some level of summer travel, legion or showcase ball to keep skills sharp in preparation for the Fall. But what happens after that? Thanks.

I asked this same question of Observer44 before my son' 1st year of college. He basically told me that based on his 2 boys experiences that the player should show up at college in the best physical shape they've ever been in. That means tons of running and wt lifting. Fall ball is really tough and the better shape your son is in the easier the transition. Some college coaches will send your son a summer work-out that he should follow as much as possible.

And of course, play lots of baseball!
Most of this depends on where he will go to school. Some coaches have different expectations for their incoming freshman. I train a lot of kids just like your son. We incorporate nutrition into the mix to improve performance and recovery. Think in terms of development. Running and lifting mindlessly without purpose is not helping development of your son and ultimately prepping him for the next level.
I would assume that by the time a hs player signs with a college they are thought to be skilled enough and athletic enough to play in college so I would also assume they are smart enough to work out correctly with or with out a trainer.

But by all means contact Jason @ athletesperformance.com if you don't have a consistent work-out plan.

My point was to step up your work-outs with gaining increased speed, endurance, and wt lifting in an organized, supervised manner.
Folks,

I really appreciate the input. I think my son now knows what lies ahead in terms of getting himself ready for the Fall....he needs to be in the best shape of his life as CaBB stated. He will be a D1 pitcher in the Fall, so we need to get pitcher specific workouts going after the high school season. He had been working out with a baseball specific trainer the last couple winters, but I don't think that would be as regular or as rigorous as a D1 baseball workout program. He will want to get a jump on this before his College coach reaches out to him after the 2010 season. I don't think it is too early to show the Coach you are serious about winning a spot in the rotation. Also, if your body is ready when you step on campus it will be one less thing to worry about in the transition from High School to College academics. He already knows the academics will be very challenging.

Thanks to those of you who offered to send me sample workout programs.

TRHit,

Yes, he plans on doing that as well when the season is over. When he was accepted Early Decision, he requested that information but I think the coach has been busy with recruiting regular decision candidates, and preparing for the Spring season. Also, I wanted to understand the time committment. I'd like to take some vacation this summer, and we're weighing travel ball vs legion ball vs getting a part time job!

Hey Fenway,

1st off, your son is going to have a blast. My freshman year playing D1 ball (2004) was so much fun...but it is tough. Our Workouts went something like this in the Fall:

Practice 6x per week, for 2-4 hours on average. The first couple weeks were all about evaluation...we'd have to run 2 miles in 14 minutes or less...pitchers had to do it even faster. We were maxed out in our push-ups, sit-ups, etc. Coaches used this to test each guys strengths. And we did all of the speed agility drills to test speed.

I'm a runner, and I didn't train too hard going in, and I was fine. I wish I would have trained harder, and the coach will definitley notice the guys that do. I wouldn't kill yourself training though, but you'll be warn out before it starts.

Our coach also sent out a workout a couple weeks before the Fall started too.

If you have any other questions, just ask. Best of luck to your son.
