How exactly does the Transfer Portal work?  I assume that a player gets listed on the portal after it becomes clear that he needs a new place to play.  And, I assume that coaches are looking at the portal and will connect with players who they want to add to their program.  But, what if the player in the portal isn’t getting attention?  What’s his status?  He’s just no longer playing ball until he somehow finds a new school to play with?  Does he still attend school while waiting in the portal?  Or, would that take away from his years of eligibility – if he attends school while hoping to find a new team and there’s nothing being offered to him.

Once the clock starts ticking on five to play four it keeps ticking. The player will lose eligibility in years regardless.

To be wanted and pursued is a good place to be. But just like high school recruiting players can’t sit back forever and assume something will happen on its own.

Be a college coach. I check it everyday. Quiet right now obviously with the season just starting but it's going to be nuts in May and the rest of the summer. Only about 300 have entered the portal from Xmas break and now that haven't matriculated. Would expect that number to be ten times that this summer. Last summer it was about 1400. It's going to be wild.
