Just curious, my 14yr old attended a tryout for 16U and 18U fall "premier" team and he did well.... I'm very proud of him.

My question - he is a catcher, they had the catchers begin with warming up the pitchers then had each catcher make five throws to second and POP time was recorded and I'm guessing they were evaluating more then just POP time. Then they threw a total of ten balls in the dirt to evaluate blocking skills (plus more I'm sure). Hitting wise, each guy bunted twice, one hit and run and then 10 contacts with the bat.

Again, my question is: is this what showcases do....I know showcases offer game situations but out side of that is this what we should expect.

Back to proud daddy time, my son looked great and poised. I would say 90% of the guys were trying to impress so throws and swings were wild. I asked him afterwards what he had learned - he said be yourself and overall the experience was boring....too much standing around.

Thoughts?
To our military men, women and families - You are all awesome - that flag is yours and I thank you for the opportunity for giving me the honor of removing my cap prior to every baseball game I see.

Most showcases you will show your skills. I.e outfielders will get balls hit to them and they will show off their fielding and throwing skills, infielders generally take ground balls from third and throw to 1st.

They will generally time them a the 60yd sprint and they take BP.

Pitchers will pitch and catchers will show their pop times and arm strength.
c'09,
good job on the tryout showing and kudos as well to your son for setting high goals

also make sure he keeps after his academics lest he neglects them and ends up at UGA Wink

as an aside I read some time back where a local '06 hs catcher "verbally commited" to Tech.
The way it was reported, there seemed to be no recruiting involved, just committment via the statement
"I will be enrolling at Tech in the fall of '06 to study and play baseball"

that certainly is a way to get attention from your dream school coaches that I hadn't thought of, though you se it in basketball by some high profile guys occasionally

The showcases my son attended always provided him with a written evaluation.

It went through strengths and perceived weaknesses...and an overall grade.

Stopped taking him to them because after four which pretty much said the same thing I got the picture.

To net it out, they all said...has all the tools needed to play at the next level, but needs to just mature and grow.

If you didn't get a written evaluation if I were you, I would ask.
Thanks all for the comments.

Chairman - I must admit GT is his favorite school - UGA is getting better but at least for the foreseeable future its still UGA - not TECH. We go to several GT games a year so let us know when we can see you play - send me a PM, maybe we can take you out for a meal sometime - i have lived in Atlanta for 10 years and only been to the Varsity once - that’s not right. I know it would be a thrill for my son.

Regarding grades, he is a freshman this year taking all gifted classes and doing well - I have been preaching to him for years that grades now count and believe it or not he is actually listening to the OLD MAN.

My son was at the same showcase. He threw a couple of balls into the outfield. He said his went into the outfield because the balls had gotten wet.

He made the team too. I think the assumption that the balls were wild because of a need to impress is not really a valid one. I think it was more of a lottery of dry versus wet balls.
