~~NCAA Transfer Portal update: almost 3200 guys looking for new schools, and it’s late June! 2000 are leaving their current D 1 programs. If you are playing a lot at your “smaller school”, or have a chance to, stay there!!! You don’t get this time back!~~

You have to be in the transfer portal if you are going to transfer, so you could be a player, playing a lot at a smaller school, get poached by another school, and you'll still go through there.

Son had a teammate who did this, he's still showing in the portal. He also is a grad student, and could have likely returned to his present school, but was given the opportunity his last year to go to a P5.

There are actually several now that are at mid majors or lower P5 schools that are playing and yet will go through the transfer portal to get to more competitive schools.  There are some Friday starters, even in SEC, that will go through the transfer portal to get to more competitive teams where they will have a chance to make a playoff run.  They are willing to step down in the roles they play to be on a winning team.  The one time transfer rule has allowed this but they are few and far between.  I'm sure there are some at smaller schools who think I can move up a level and play on a larger team but that is no guarantee either.  But even those are few and far between.  If you are playing, you probably should stay where you are.

Francis7 hit the nail on the head!  My 2015 was recruited by 2 "Big State U" schools.  He would maybe play as a Jr most likely as Sr or perhaps even more likely want to transfer.  Luckily Plan A was to go to a HA school and play all 4 yrs with leaving with a valuable degree!  HA don't take transfers and very few transfer or leave and unless they can't handle the academics.  2015 played in the top wood bat league and if good enough would get recognized to perhaps get to the next level.  Happy to say his degree got him to the next level just not as a player!

Go where you can play and if it doesn't work out you still would want to stay and get an education.

I agree with your post, but for the sake of clarity, High Academic schools do take transfers.  Son had teammates in the Ivy that transferred in.  I agree that most stay because the value of the degree makes it the best decision.
