govols,
Kino was a good choice. His background is baseball vs the previous coach whose expertise was power lifting and football.
Kino is a good teacher, intense, and the boys will be prepared come game time. Runs a good practice and all players are involved. Kids know he eats, sleeps and breaths baseball and and they respond to him as evidence by his record of winning on the field. I beleive he has won district in each of the last three years at the JV level.
It will be interesting on what he does with the assistant coach. I can't imagine Kino letting the assistant coach call the pitches, make out the lineup, make all roster moves including mound visits and pitching changes. The previous coach let the assistant coach run the show and the assistants main role seemed to be to yell at the umpires. He is the head volleball coach and maybe yelling and screaming is good in that game but in a baseball game usually cooler heads provide better results IMO.
Hopefully the enviornment will better for my 2010 grad than it was for my 2004 as being led by a coaching staff whose expertise is volleyball and power lifting did not allow for much growth on the baseball field. However son did learn how to do an overhand serve and the proper way to do a squat so I guess he can't say he did not learn something under these guys.
Son was lucky and was able to get a scholarship due to showcases and a good summer program but all those other kids that thought the HS coach was going to help are going nowhere. What a shame. Glad to see the change.
Good luck to you in the future and I am sure your program will continue to improve under your leadership.
