I HAVE NO PROBLEMS WITH KINO, GOOD BASEBALL MAN. I HOPE HE GETS A NEW PITCHING COACH. SACKETT IS TERRIBLE. I HAVE A PERSONAL PROBLEM WITH BOTH OF THE COACHES WHICH DROVE MY SON FROM BASEBALL. HOW DO YOU TAKE YOUR STARTING CATCHER LAST YEAR AND ALL OF A SUDDEN HE IS YOUR STARTING PITCHER. PEOPLE WELL FIGURE OUT WHO I AM, LAMAR IS WORTHLESS WHEN IT COMES TO BASEBALL, GLAD THAT THEY WILL GET A NEW START. HOPE COACH KINO ALL THE SUCCESS, MY SON TOLD ME HE WAS GLAD THAT KINO GOT THE JOB. IF YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE GOVOLS EMAIL ME.
govols,

Kino was a good choice. His background is baseball vs the previous coach whose expertise was power lifting and football.

Kino is a good teacher, intense, and the boys will be prepared come game time. Runs a good practice and all players are involved. Kids know he eats, sleeps and breaths baseball and and they respond to him as evidence by his record of winning on the field. I beleive he has won district in each of the last three years at the JV level.

It will be interesting on what he does with the assistant coach. I can't imagine Kino letting the assistant coach call the pitches, make out the lineup, make all roster moves including mound visits and pitching changes. The previous coach let the assistant coach run the show and the assistants main role seemed to be to yell at the umpires. He is the head volleball coach and maybe yelling and screaming is good in that game but in a baseball game usually cooler heads provide better results IMO.

Hopefully the enviornment will better for my 2010 grad than it was for my 2004 as being led by a coaching staff whose expertise is volleyball and power lifting did not allow for much growth on the baseball field. However son did learn how to do an overhand serve and the proper way to do a squat so I guess he can't say he did not learn something under these guys. Wink

Son was lucky and was able to get a scholarship due to showcases and a good summer program but all those other kids that thought the HS coach was going to help are going nowhere. What a shame. Glad to see the change.

Good luck to you in the future and I am sure your program will continue to improve under your leadership.
04and10,

You need to discuss this with the AD & Principal of the school to see if the camp was "league sponsored, etc..

Balk,

A "volunteer service hours form" from a club that the kids belong to at the school, or a statement from the coach, signed, should suffice that there was no compensation. Again, check with AD or Admin. at the school.

I've known kids that have worked umpiring, field maintenence, scheduling lessons @ facilities, etc. that have been ok...

ALWAYS contact the UIL directly if in doubt. I did, and found out from the UIL Assistant Athletic Director that UIL gives the school district(s) the right to impose any additional retrictions covering almost any additional matter related to UIL activities and fundraising. In short, a school district can restrict student athletes from participating in such things as 'outside' (select or other-league) teams during the school year as well as possibly in some instances during the 'summer months'. The right to have additional rules, I believe is based more on fundraising activities than outside team participation.
UIL really only defines "amateur" relative to the UIL. NCAA, etc. has their own definitions.
It is my opinion that persons with serious questions contact both the UIL and the school district superintendant's office. Don't rely on an a.d.'s opinion or ruling. In at least one instance that I am aware of the a.d. cost himself a job because he misinterpreted a UIL / district policy.
The last thing to keep in mind is that the UIL squarely places responsibility on the student athlete in most instances to conform to the rules. A review of some of the hearings also makes it very clear that penalties are severe for those aware of violations and not reporting them.
