Unwritten Rule

I used to see that often when the kids moved up to the big field. The slow 13 year olds got thrown out at 1st from RF alot.

Unless he had his wallet chained to his belt, I would tell him that players usually get dotted for retaliating for bogus unwritten rules.

Don't know about this warranting a knock down, but I have known a few hitters to round first and run up the 1B's back on such a play. I'd think 1B would tell his RF to not attempt it again.....

So LongballJunkie, I guess you are saying this is taboo? In Texas, maybe?

I have never heard of this. I have always been under the impression that a team gets
outs where they can get them-no gifts.

I'll tell you one thing, as a former pitcher, The rightfielder would have to answer to me
in the dugout for not making an attempt on an obvious out possibility.

Nonsense.....How are you going to run up the 1st basemans back when you are trying to get to first base before you are thrown out by the RF.I saw Willie McGee hit Curt Schilling right in the helmet trying to throw him out at 1st. Schilling did not throw at any body, because 1. it would be bush to do so and 2.what goes around comes around and he or his teamates would be targets too.

If you get out of the box so slow that the RF can throw you out, you should go hide your head and not threaten anyone.

Never heard of such a thing, if the RF has a chance to get him, you get him, if the runner reaches first he could represent the winning run.

You never ever give up a hit if you can get the guy out on the throw.

All-American son from a few years ago and another D1 son who is a pitcher.

At younger levels with a short porch and a strong arm in right it is commom. When kids move up to 60-90 and the rf is playing shallow it is common. As the players grow up and catch up to the field it is very uncommon. In all my years of coaching HS baseball I have seen one attempt at first base and the kid was thrown out. Catcher ran poor and hit a seed to rf with the of playing in because winning run was in scoring posistion. Im with bb scout on this one. The only person you should be mad at is the kid that is capable of being thrown out at first on a ball hit to the of.

As I get older even the unwritten rules are being re invented.

It's a risk/reward issue. If the RFer is going to 1st on a single he had better make a good throw or runner could end up on 3rd.

If it is an unwritten rule they must not know about it in AAA. This past Saturday I saw the Round Rock rightfielder throw out the Albuquerque pitcher at 1st on a ball he hit to right. There was also no retaliation on part of the pitcher.

Bottom line is, if you have a chance to get an out, you should try it.
