Youngest checked into the Vandy camp today (Sun-Thur).  Heard it is a great camp.  1st text I received from him was after checking into the dorm but before the "orientation" meeting............."25 states and 3 countries" represented.  Hope he (and the other campers) has fun, learns a lot, meets some friends, and stays healthy.

Edit to update  - 38 states and 3 countries.   270 campers.  100 on waiting list.

7 camper to coach ratio

Highlights from the 1st day according to my 2022.

No rules.  Standards that build the person instead.

Phone use is limited to certain times of the day.

No phones at dinner.  Have a conversation.  Shake someones hand.  Look people in the eye.

Make a friend.

Hats off in dinning room

Your actions are a reflection of your parents.

When you leave, you will be a better baseball player and a better teenager.  The rest is  up to you.

Tonight was easy, the rest of the week will be hard, but fun.  Enjoy it.  You are "playing" a game.

We (parents) are not there, but from limited experience my 2022 has had with college coaches, I can see why kids love to go to school here.

My boy attended a few years ago. Tim Corbin has a fantastic camp that is as much about character and behavior and self discipline as it is about baseball. Not only are there campers from all over the world, Corbin brings in coaches from all over, too. I remember my son describing how Coach Corbin taught them to stand during the National Anthem and I notice my son still takes that exact posture and does not move when the anthem is played. If you want to get your boy in, you have to watch the web site and register as soon as registration opens. Boys can stay with Mom & Dad in a hotel and commute if you are coming from out of town - some families do that bc it is cheaper than paying for hotel for them and dorm for the son.

Going to Vandy isn't all about baseball, but as mentioned, about life experiences. They teach you how to be self sufficient. They teach you how to cook, do your laundry, manage finances. Mrs. Corbin is very much involved as well.

It's easy to see why so many  top prospects choose going to Vandy over professional ball.

Interested to hear more about standards v rules.  Very smart approach (at least in other organizational settings).

I'm the dad of a '22 as well - if you don't mind, are you guys local to Vandy?  We're starting to figure out the camp thing.  Happy to pm if that's better.

Makes me smile.... I hope all enjoy the camp.  Ethan told me he and Kumar stopped to talk to some campers yesterday while walking past the field.   Ethan started his student/athlete journey yesterday meeting AD/Chancellor , having a physical , meeting professors and advisors.  He started class today.... and TPM is correct,  The more I am there the more I think MC is the real boss

Hopefully the campers soak up as much as they can , no one better than Corbin....

Would you recommend this camp for a high school age kid or is it geared more towards younger kids?

I would wait for the HS camp.  By far the best camp we ever went to and we went twice (summer and fall).  Made me think, for the first time, about the kind of man I wanted my son to play for, not just the baseball and academic aspect of the school.  I cannot imagine anyone leaving and not being impressed.  We loved everything about it, including how involved Mrs. Corbin was.  It is long days...  8:30-8:30 most days.  The boys are wiped out and love it.  The Fall camp is a little smaller, and run differently.  You have to choose position or pitcher because it is only two days.  During Fall, pitchers get 3 minutes to pitch in front of coaches and like everything at the camp, they stay exactly on schedule.  Summer, they play 4 games I think, usually at least one at the Vanderbilt stadium.

Was your son interested in Vandy and on their radar screen when he did camp there?

Sounds like an amazing camp.  Nashville is a schlep from SoCal but memories last forever.

It was my son’s dream school when we went the first time. He felt even stronger after that summer camp.  They talked to him a bit then and said they would like to keep an eye on him.  We went to the Fall camp and they remembered him. He did well and they asked him to stay after and tour the facilities. After that, they asked him to call and he spoke to them every few weeks through this summer (8-9 months).  It didn’t end up working out with them but I respect the program and still think it was a valuable experience.  Again, for me, it brought in the whole coach as a person thing, and lessons outside of baseball.

Bumping this thread.....my '22 sent an intro email to (many) schools and got an invite to the fall prospect camp.  Is that roughly the same thing as the summer camp?  Son's only a freshman, but I sense from the group here that this is a pretty unique experience.  Question - does the camp skew a bit younger ('22 and '21) than smaller or less well-known programs?  Thanks for the assistance!

My son went Sophomore year. Lots of sophomore, a few juniors and freshmen. 125ish instead of 250 kids.

The Fall camp is a little smaller, and run differently.  You have to choose position or pitcher because it is only two days.  During Fall, pitchers get 3 minutes to pitch in front of coaches and like everything at the camp, they stay exactly on schedule.

Thanks!  Can't tell you how helpful it is to get first-hand accounts of stuff like this.

I played at Vandy in the 80's, so when my son went up for a USA event on campus in early August, I reached out to Coach to see if I could take my son in to look at the new baseball facilities.  I was blown away, but that's not why I reply here.  I believe I may have met your son while I was there.  Not 100% sure, but I think so.  He was hanging out with Kumar waiting to do a workout.  Was he on campus then?  Anyway, it was a cool experience for me and my son to see how far the program has come since I was an undergrad there.

It won’t happen this year due to new rules, but last Fall they asked 8 campers to stay after and tour the facilities. They were all sophomores and several committed later that year.  So I would say the focus is on sophomores but I don’t think it hurts to go earlier. My son went summer before  and emailed the coaches until the fall camp.  They remembered him from the summer and Corbin thanked him for the updates.  Never hurts to be seen, and  again, even if it’s not a fit for him, great experience and helps you know what to look for in a program.
