I was wondering if anyone knows the best way to verify if someone is really a pro-scout? I am not worried about the scouts that are actively persuing college players, but the individuals that claim they are MLB scouts that give lessons or have special teams. We have a few in the area that claim they are scouts and want to charge high prices to be on their teams and/or to get lessons. However I cannot find a way to verify their credentials. It seems like anyone can say they are an associate scout for any MLB team and open shop to start giving lessons and there is no way to tell if they have that background.

There's a guy in Illinois claiming to be a scout who used to be a member of this board. He was pretty much discredited until he departed the board. All he does is a mechanics review of pitchers for a real scout. The guy never pitched. He didn't play baseball past LL. Everything he knows is learned philosophy of mechanics from others. He also gives expensive pitching and hitting lessons.

Anyone can "say" they are a "scout".
If they tell you which team, you can contact MLB & they will forward your inquiry to that teams MLB Area scout. Or just ask them if they are a birddog.
To check a "former player", look them up on BaseballCube.com, or BaseballReference.com Everyone who was drafted & played are listed, where they went to school, trades, stats, etc.

There are several levels, as well. I don't remember all of them, but you could ask fungo, BabaBomber, TRHit...
birddog -lowest level, & where you usually hear claims. They aren't on payroll of MLB.
assoc. scout-not sure if they are the same level as a birddog.

Area Scout-legit, on a teams payroll. They travel a specific territory & may use a "birddog" or 2...usually too busy to coach or teach lessons.

Cross checkers work out of the teams home office.
General Manager- Well, you know what he does!!

Many scouts that run scout teams are paid, some are associate scouts, sometimes called bird dogs (only paid when someone they turn in gets drafted).
Many have cards made, ask for one. You should always check up on anyone who will be coaching your son or giving lessons, scout or no scout.
One of my son's coaches in HS was an associate scout, probably one of he best coaches he ever had, he had his own business, but did scouting for the Cardinals.
I do believe Coach May is an associate scout, he can coach my son anytime.
RJM,

We have a guy here who who teaches the 'blah blah way' (his company's name) and claims to have played pro ball. Yet a check of baseballreference.com and other references (real ex-pro ball players) to check his claims of playing pro ball reveals nothing. He also claims to know Torii Hunter and posted it on his web site along with a picture of him swinging a bat, but when Hunter's friends (who did play pro ball) here found out about it they called him to ask if this the knew this guy. When Hunter said no they told him about the web site and he had his lawyer draft a letter to this guy to remove the picture and any reference to Hunter, which he quickly did.

He continues to perpetrate the fraud and claims to have something like 16 teams associated with his brand from Mass to Hawaii. He has built a pretty solid following around here with the 9U to 12U crowd. He talks up a good story about all these major leaguers he has played with, but he is full of it and unfortunately I found out the hard way because I agreed to put together a 16U team for him a couple of years ago that ended in disaster because of his meddling. This is when I began to suspect there was more to him that met the eye. I subsequently began to discover the truth about him when I met the ex-pro ball player who relayed the story to me about Hunter.

They're are plenty of frauds out there that sound really good, but buyer beware...

Great advice already mentioned. There are birddog scouts-assocaite scouts(same thing) which are unpaid but in most cases very helpful to the area scout, then there are part-time scouts which are paid a salary or stipend, then there are area scouts who are full time employees, then regional and national cross-checkers that work out of there homes but do an enormous amount of travel, then there is the asst scouting director and then scouting director. Like already mentioned the baseball america directory is a great place to find a list of all of the area scouts and above, and most of the time a teams part-time scouts will be listed as well. Associate scouts or birddog scouts will not be listed.
You've gotten some good explanations so far. This is an issue that bothers me on several fronts. An associate scout, aka bird dog, is nothing more than an unpaid assistant to help an area scout (also known in some circles as a scouting supervisor) with information on players in a sub-area of his scouting territory. The problem comes about when someone uses this association with an MLB clubs area scout to promote his business. Being an associate scout is the bottom rung of the scouting ladder, and does not convey any authority to represent a club in any manner or make any representations on their behalf. That is part of a standard associate's contract. An associate will be paid a very small amount of money if a prospect he recommends is drafted and signs. Think $100 until the prospect gets to a higher level of minor league ball. In reality, nobody who is serious about working as a associate does it for anything other than the desire to help the players, clubs and their love of the game.

In my opinion, the biggest problem arises when someone who is an associate uses that position to market themselves to players and parents, giving the impression that the player will get better instruction, coaching or opportunities because of the associate scout. Nothing could be further from the truth. The quality of instruction, coaching or opportunities will come about as a result of the abilities of the coach, not because some area scout asked him to help out in his local area. I often see what you're asking about, where someone will advertise "Scout for the New York Yankee.". They most often misuse this to derive greater income by bringing in more customers and charging higher fees to hopeful parents who don't know any better. It most certainly does NOT mean they are better or can help a player to any greater degree than a non-scout who coaches. My peronsal opinion is that this is deceptive advertising.

I say this as someone who is an associate scout for the Baltimore Orioles, and previously with area scouts for two other National League clubs. That, and four quarters will get you a cup of coffee at most places not named Starbucks, woo hoo! Who cares? I run 4 summer teams with approximately 75 players in our organization. I'm sure that probably 3/4 of our players and parents have no idea that I have an assocation with any club other than my summer club, and that's just how it should be. The players don't need to know. It doesn't directly affect them or get them anything that they wouldn't get anyway from me and our other coaches. There are a lot of good assocaites out there who help area scouts do their job, and go mostly un-noticed, and that is the way it should be.

If someone is using their postion as an associate scout to drum up business, rather than relying on their ability to teach the game, peronsally, I'd walk away. I've seen some associate scouts who are absolutely mediocre baseball coaches, but many great baseball coaches who'll never have any formal arrangement with any pro club. I hope this perspective helps.

Not many full-time scouts anymore.

If interested in verifying, check out Baseball Bluebook (there is one for Pro's and another edition for Colleges), The Pro Bluebook's been around since.......1909?

As an example, here's a look at names of the Front Office, baseball operations, Field Ops, Scouting Department, minor leage affiliates.......

And yes, it is considered by many as a living document and thus changes yearly. Much of the info is kept up to date on the Parent Clubs web site.

OBTW: In Maryland, there must be over twenty part-time scouts for the Orioles. And of course the Scouting Departments for each parent club may have different hierarchies, organizational names, and of course Areas of Responsibilities (AOR)

Maybe a response to the original post!
If you don't get it, you don't get it!

Why does Rizzi say those things about your experience!

As another example, this time an on-line example (and they don't list area scouts (either pro or amateur)

T-Dad......Can you guess this correctly?

---------------
Two of the games best catchers in the past ten years signed two year deals this past week.
I think Dayton and JJ did their homework, correctly.
The other....they overpaid $5M ...and for a backup?

That's ok, whatever you think TR, but FWIW. I'd rather be who I am than what you are.
Funny that I mentioned the "Sister Superior" aspect in a previous post---today I get a letter from my grade school--Our Lady of Victory--Class of 1955---asking me to join their alumni association---heck there cannot be many left from my class---

It also shows the power of the internet---I have lived in at least a dozen locations since then and they still found me at my current address--I guess Big Brother does exist

TR you know nothing about me, in fact you know nothing about most of the people who post regularly here or most of their players or their families or even what they do for a living. Watch your comments about why others are here, they are not here for business, nor to put food on their tables. Keep that in mind when you throw stuff out there.
