I'm not a HS coach, just a dad and retired travel/LL coach but yes, you can do it. Here's what I learned using mine:

  1. The iPad is not the best, but it's decent, especially if your iPad is new enough to have retina display.
  2. You're going to need an app to do slo-mo and diagrams if you want to. I tried a few and liked Ubersense the best.
  3. A cheap tripod mount will help.
  4. You want to shoot in bright sun to get the cleanest video. Indoor lighting is not good enough to freeze action.
  5. Get the camera as close to the hitter as you need to. Never use the camera's zoom (this is a good tip for anybody who uses a phone or tablet cam to shoot sports or really almost anything)

Ubersense has a cool tool to do side-by-side slow-mo. It takes a bunch of monkeying around to get the timing right, but you can have before and after views of a kid display side by side.  Or if you can find a clip of pro taken from a similar angle, you can show the kid what his mechanics look like next to the pro.

MLB clips are copyrighted so Ubersense can't post them, and  you'll have to get creative if you want to use them. Probably the best way is to find a program for your computer that you can use to capture YouTube videos.  Convert that to a MOV or similar file, then transfer to your iPad using Dropbox or some other cloud-based file sharing solution. Or you could try shooting the TV while you watch. That might work.
