Virginia Cardinals -- Tryouts Nov. 14 for 2011 Team

As with this year's team, the Cardinals will remain unique among exposure-oriented travel programs in that the team is fully financially sponsored.

There are no player participation fees. When traveling, players' hotel rooms are provided. We also coordinate van pool transportation to regional tournaments and, for our trip to East Cobb, we provide team vans for the week. Players are responsible for their gear and their meals while traveling.

The Cardinals compiled a record of 30-15-5 over the past 4+ months, but more importantly, we have three firm scholarship commitments for our players and more on the way. We are looking for players who have both the talent and the drive to compete at the Division I level, and even with returning players we have openings at all positions.

In answer to questions received, the tryout will be a metal bat event.

I will second that.

From the 1st time I heard about this opportunity I was blown away. I hope this becomes the model for travel/showcase baseball moving forward. Rich & Brad will always be remembered as starting the movement if others follow their lead.

Baseball is becoming expensive. Its great to eliminate the barriers of entry!

Rich & Brad have started what should prove to be a very good thing for kids in our area.

Currently we have over 40 players saying they plan to come to tryouts.

We're glad to handle everyone who wishes to be considered. Please understand, though, that giving everyone a full and fair look with such numbers takes a lot of prior planning and organization.

Tryouts have been moved to James River High School, due to the City of Petersburg's decision to close its park for the season a bit ahead of us.

For those not familiar with it, James River High School is at 3700 James River Road, Midlothian, VA 23113. This location is just off Robious Road, 2 miles east of its interchange with Route 288, southwest of the City of Richmond.

Again, this is an open tryout, but you do have to pre-register.

In order to plan this event effectively for those who pre-register, there will be no participation by walk-ups.

There is an information form I will need each interested player to complete and return to me by tomorrow (Monday) evening if you want to try out. So, if you have not been in touch yet, you need to do that tonight!

The weather looks great and we're heading into an event with 40 players from 20 different high schools from as far away as Culpeper, Alexandria, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake.

We are very happy with the caliber of team we are building for next summer and fall. And while we will come close to finalizing our roster out of today's tryout, there will still be room for another "find" here and there as the spring moves along. (We left that room intentionally.)

Look for news about a spring tryout, in a few months. That one, though, will likely be "by invitation only."

We anticipate adding 3-4 more players as the spring progresses. So, we're not done quite yet, but things are looking great!

I didn't realize Poh was a 2012. I have seen him pitch a few times and been very impressed. All along I thought he was a 2011. Now I'm even more impressed.

Generally, we would not exclude already committed players. We don't go looking for those guys, since so few juniors are already committed, and since those few who are seldom have reason to change teams. But I suppose it could work out.

Our main requirement is that the player be a Virginia resident. That is a condition our financial sponsor placed on the team.

The Virginia Cardinals welcome three more players to our summer roster:

*Junior Joe Manion, a Powhatan High School LHP;
*Sophomore John Booker, a home-schooled SS/RHP; and
*Freshman Brad McKay, a Cosby High School C/UT.

Congratulations to these three players, who complete our team for the summer travel season.

We had limited needs after the open tryout last fall. We held a small, invitation only tryout just for players who played the positions where we had needs.

Sorry, did not have any contact from you to consider in advance. Hopefully your son is 2013 and we might get another chance in the future.

Either PM me or e-mail Rich to get on a list for tryouts for fall and next summer. I think Rich plans to take on some more '13's for fall, after we have some of our '12's taken care of.
