Less of a concern prior to the inning and at those distances.......

So if you saw the bullpen watcher without a helmet would you let him go? Our area in Kentucky started enforcing this rule about two years ago. It really slowed the game because most kids would forget to get the helmet and time would be called for him to get it.

It's much better now since everyone is used to the rule but it seems to me if the bullpen watcher is down the OF line he is far enough away to not need a helmet.

What if the bullpen was inside the fence down the foul line? That is where ours is and the umps make our spotters wear helmets. Any field we go to that has bullpens inside the fence spotters have to wear helmets.

I thought this was a Fed rule but if you are saying that the spotter doesn't need a helmet then would it be some sort of state rule or am I reading you wrong?
Currently the NFHS rule 3-3-4 does not literally require helmets on players who are protecting players warming up. They only have to have a glove....

BUT....

It is however, a point of emphasis listed in this years rules interpreters guide. So umpires who insist that they wear head proctection are within thier right to do so.

As with most rule revisions, the pattern of NFHS is to put an emphasis title on a potential rule change, then move it to a full rewrite and rule inclusion in the next years rule book.

Somes state may have adopted this as a rule and not as a POE, so I encourage you to check with your state association.
Thanks PIAAump - honestly I don't care what they decide because it's a non factor in a game - unless you only have 4 helmets then you are in trouble.

I may not always agree all safety rules are necessary but i'm not going to complain about them. If we keep a kid from getting hurt then it's worth it. I just wasn't sure whether this was a rule or not. In the area we play - they enforce it to the extreme and hold games up until the spotter gets a helmet.

If they are consistent in calling it all year and all umps call it then if a game is held up it's the coaches fault for not telling his kids the rule.

I agree with you........as to the helmet issue, some of the areas that I umpire in are fairly rural and finding more than 4 unbroken and compliant helmets has been a challenge.....Ive even had to supply baseballs to get the game started..........

Some of the best sportsmanship I have ever seen has come from these $$ challenged programs who will shar helmets, gloves, and catchers gear to get the game in......
