Does anyone haveinformation about their relatively new head coach, coach mountain or the program itself. Also anything about their academics would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Jeff Mountain was the grad asst. coach at John Carroll U. my son's freshman year. You are a pitcher, and that is Jeff's forte. He enjoyed a superb pitching career for Allegheny College (an excellent D-III baseball school) as an undergrad.
My son always had good things to say about Coach Mountain, but he could tell you more than I can. PT me if you would like his email address.
The school is small---has a good academic reputation. I know W & J's facilities are terrific, since they share the stadium built for the Washington Wild Things (Independent league). I also know that the program has struggled for a long time, and Coach Mountain is trying to breathe new life into it. Again, let me know if you'd like to contact my son.
I live within a stones (or baseball in this case) throw from Washington, PA and I can tell you that W&J is a great academic institution and also shares a field with the Washington Wild Things. However I cannot tell you much about the baseball program for I haven't done much investigating or following.
I can't say enough about Jeff Mountain. Knowing him personally, he is an outstanding person, and although very young to be a head coach (25 years old I believe), he will make up for any inexperience with a great work ethic and a competitive fire that has always helped him succeed.
From what I hear, he is in a great situation where he's at. They are getting a new facility, great support from the administration. He just had to ride out the storm the first year where he inherited a bad program with minimal rules, dedication and discipline. He's kicked all those guys off the team, and brought in several young players who he is hoping will rival his desire to win and improve.
It won't happen overnight, but knowing how Jeff has been, I believe they'll start to turn it around.
Some players I know from the area have received some correspondence from Washington and Jefferson. I heard they won their league this year after finishing in last place for several years. Does anyone know if their new facility is turfed and if so, what kind of turf? Is it the old synthetic turf, or that new turf that looks and plays like grass. Being outside in February-March in the NE part of the US is very appealing to kids from up in the snow belt. I know the coach, and things must be going pretty well down there.
My son has committed to play at Washington and Jefferson this fall. The College has finished a new facility right next to the Washington Wild Things Minor League Facility. It is all field turf (individual grass with the crushed rubber pellets) which should provide them with almost year round play.
Coach Mountain was a significant reason my son decided on the school. He is a young motivated individual who relates to the young player very well. My son was impressed with the school, the new facilities and the direction the program was moving. As stated they finished first this year in the PAC. W&J is a first rate academic school and that appeals to me as the dad. The recruiting experience was excellent, the on campus visits and communication between the coach, my son and us the parents were exceptional. Academics are important, you got to have the grades.
