So my son has been helping coach a local 9yr old fall ball team since his little cousin is on it. He hung out all summer watching my son pitch and his dad asked if son wouldn't mind helping the pitchers. The head coach approved so he's been helping out the past couple of weeks.

Tonite was to be the parents vs. players game. Son was looking foward to it as he had expectations that this would allow him to really work with some of the players in "live" situations, instruct, etc.

Much to sons surprise, the Dad's get up to bat and start dropping bombs (little league field) off the kids, the headcoach is throwing to the boys at full velocity, Dad's playing off base and then stealing, when the ball got past the Dad catching (and the boy can then steal 2nd) he picks up the ball and throws the boys out, at one point son got behind the pitcher to call strikes/balls and the Dad's would complain about the calls! They were being thrown by 9yr olds for pete sake!

The score was 28-0 after the 1st inning - no kidding.

Can you believe this insanity?!

I honestly can't say who the moms were yelling at since I wasn't there. I do know some actually played on the parents team according to son.

I HOPE that the remaining moms yell at the dads when they get home. 20dad is right - how boneheaded could they have been?! My son said some of the grounders that were hit would have been hard pressed to have been stopped by highschoolers and had they taken bad bounces, well, this story would have a more tragic end I suppose.

It's one thing to get out there and have some fun, help the boys learn, show good sportsmanship, etc. but good grief, why humiliate the boys and show them up? Isn't this the age about instilling the love of the game?

That's incredibly lame. Bunch of guys reliving some glory days against nine year olds. Reminds me of a time a (well-known) baseball camp group sent a few collegiate players over to our army base for the same age group, and at the conclusion of camp there was a 'game'. One of the college guys pitched to his two buddies who were hitting all-out. After seeing a kid at third base almost get his head taken off, I went out and pulled both my boys (ages 9 and 6 at the time). Made it know to MWR what had happened there and that group was not invited back. They could have seriously injured or killed a kid. NEGLIGENCE. YGD, the dads in your story were grossly negligent and probably lucky a kid didn't get seriously hurt or worse.

Beyond incredibly lame. YGD, glad to see you didn't have a young one on the team! Always shake my head when I hear of such "fun" Roll Eyes happenings

Went through similiar experience with my oldest when he was 8U playing up in the 9's. League team opponent was a no show, so one of the "coaches" thought it would be "fun" for kids to play 7 or 8 parents that were there. I showed up at the park to find my wife playing 2B, & after a few parent homeruns, one of the Dads ropes it out of the park & into the first row of parked cars. Took out a gold gradient windshield on a Lincoln Towncar. Ended up being a very expensive trip to the ballpark for one family! Within the week had pulled my oldest off this year older team, he was getting much better teaching/coaching with the 8U MP team he also played with, & as a team the 8's were just a few weeks away from playing first kid pitch tournaments.

Whoa.

What in the world could they have possibly got out of doing this to their kids?

Man, this story has raised my ire more than any other - at least that I can remember. Let us put these dads on a major league field, with ML hitters, but playing little league distances, and with heavy oversized gloves they can't quite move around so well.....and let it play itself out.

Absolutely disgusting.

In a HS tournament in Japan, we had a coaches-only home-run derby after the players had theirs. All players were sent to the OF wall and none were allowed to play in -- for their safety. Well, some of us coaches can still rake it out.....and no need to get any of the guys hurt......it just takes some one to analyze the inherent danger of a situation and say "no".

As others have said, I am just thankful that none of the 9-yr-old players got hurt.

I remember a more appropriate parents-vs-players game when my son was on a 12-yr-old travel team. Moms and Dads played. I can't remember if the dads were required to bat with some kind of handicap, but none of them hit it dangerously hard. I'm a former college fastpitch player, but had trouble timing my swing to 12-yr-old pitchers. Moms were allowed unlimited swinging strikes in each at-bat. The muscles in my sides were so sore by the end of that game, from swinging and missing!

Patently stupid.

What equipment were the parents playing with? I can see the potential damage that a -12 bat could do to a kid when it is hit by a full grown adult.

I let my kid pitch to me when he was ten, in a cage and with him behind an L screen. I still only half swung (I'm 5'11, 210 lbs) and was scared every time I connected. I can't imagine trying to embarrass your kids like that.
