This isnt baseball but it is a great coaching story, especially in today's "the inmates run the asylum " world >

The UCONN Hoops Head Coach Jim Calhoun suspended two of his top players before their game with # 7 ranked INDIANA UNIV today-- reason---all Coach Calhoun said was it was "his reasons"

Then UCONN goes out and beats Indiana at Indiana on national TV--I think this is what coaching is all about---look at the mans track record and the players in the pros---Way to go Coach !!!

That is good to hear. Did he suspend them or kick them off?

Some coaches lose sight of the whole "addition by subtraction" concept. Getting rid of cancerous players, even if they have a ton of talent, will usually end up being the best thing for your team. Everyone will usually end up happier and sometimes your team even plays better.

I don't know the facts of this case but Calhoun seems to have embraced the "addition by subtraction" concept - at least for today.
AP report:

A day after he suspended two key guards for violating team rules ....

Less than 24 hours before tipoff, Calhoun faced a quandary when he learned Jerome Dyson, a starter, and Doug Wiggins, a backup, had violated team rules. Calhoun wouldn't say what the players did but when he got the details, he decided to leave the players at home.

Mizzou basketball coach followed up on his team rules last night as well- 5 suspended for breaking his rules. I now don't care they win the up coming games or not, the coach just proved to his team that he and all fellow team mates demand respect and will go the extra mile to see that they get it. I hope more coaches follow suit and demand accountability from their players at all levels of all sports!
Two or three years ago a high school coach in the metro area suspended two starters and a key sub just as basketball districts started. He suspended them for not meeting his academic requirements as opposed to the state's requirements. The team won the state championship.

Yes the team was loaded, but three players found out it's grades first, then basketball. The three lost out on a once in a lifetime experience.

The coach's attitude is the way off the street corners and into a career starts with grades and responsibility in high school. He talks just as much about his former players who have gone on to college as the ones who went on to play major D1 and the NBA.
