First post here.

I am a US citizen with a Taiwanese wife and a 12 year old son who loves baseball.

He has played baseball in the local system here for three years, and has the ambition of playing baseball at the university level in the US.  I have been reading the forums here, and have to say that I have learned so much already, but haven't seen this kind of topic posted in the archives so I'll ask it.

I have a lot of questions, but will start with the general question of how are Taiwanese players generally regarded by recruiters/coaches in the US?

The kids here play a LOT of baseball, seem to have good fundamentals and a deep understanding of the game, but it doesn't seem like there are many that go on to the US system, so I'm curious to find out what the general impression of the Taiwan Elementary, Jr. High and High School system is, and how players coming out of this system are regarded in the States.

Thanks,

Jim

I know the pros are investing much more in foreign countries but not sure about college.  I think talent will open eyes regardless of where it comes from.  I would assume that most college coaches are not going to actively recruit foreign players simply because of the time/costs involved but if a foreign player shows an interest in an American school, the coach will probably then pursue if he sees enough to like.

I wouldn't think there would be a coach who would automatically dismiss foreign players, especially from one of the Asian countries.  The academics and work ethic in those cultures tend to be high which would appeal to any coach.  I think it's more "out of sight, out of mind."

Welcome!

Keep in mind that this is all  about getting an education.

If I am a college coach I am going to offer the opportunity (scholarship dollars to pay for college) to someone who has gone through the american educational system. You can look at any college baseball roster and see that not too many foreign born players are teams, with exceptions to our neighbors to the north.  The exceptions may be given to those players of US parents living abroad, perhaps for the armed forces.  We have a parent who posts here who lives in south Korea who sent their son to play here in the states.  But he did send his son here in summers to be seen by college coaches.

Henshwang;

Do you know the Seattle Mariners scout - Jamie Storvick.

A few years ago he and several players from Taiwan joined our American teams in Australia. One of the Taiwan players has played in the MLB.

We are again sending 4 teams to Australia during December. One of our coaches will be Dave La Roche, former NY Yankees pitcher. Please see our notice on the "Ask about College" forum.

In recent years, players from China, Mexico and DR have joined our American teams.

Several are now playing in the World Cup.

Yes, I know. They can fly to Perth, Western Australia and play with our '13 and under team and meet the 4 Americans, who are now coaching in Perth and the 6 Americans

[former College or Pro players], who are playing on the WA Club teams in November to February. At this time, Henshwang is exploring options and opportunities for his "young" son and himself.
