Whats the average fastball (mph) you see in high school?

I'm not an expert on this topic, but my guess is around 82. There are guys out there who throw high 80's though.

i disagree, the average fastball at the varsity level is probably 75-78

Now that you bring it up. I think 82 is too high, but I would not say the average is 75. My new guess is around 79. Yes there are kids who throw 75, but for an average I would say the number of kids who throw harder bring the average to about 79.

I have heard 78 as the average HS Varsity pitching speed. For every mid-eighties guy there are a few mid-seventies guys on most teams, and most teams don't have a mid-eighties guy...if you look at all teams not just the stronger ones.

Well, Quinn Ewert was on my team last Spring. I know he has touched 92. I've heard of guys throwing harded, but have not seen it.

I've hit 89 a couple times n 90 once and ive seen doyle thorw n he was throwing bout the same

75-78 on average would be my guess. Saw Mike Broadway and Chaz Roe at 95.

i was throwing on 2 days rest u try it sometime nu can call up a college that clocked me at 90

i checked the information by the way, there is no way that you pitched on two days rest, your sectional semi game was on wednesday and you didnt even pitch, so i think i need another answer.

Augustana College got me throwing 88 consistent last week. University of Nebraska Omaha Monmouth College Iowa Western And University of Iowa but italked to them n they told me to go juco be4 i went there though

i didnt are #3 threw against harlem and then i thought we would go back to are #1 but we went back to me at the end of legion season

I do think that radar speed is overated, if u can pitch u can pitch. Granted, illinois does not have the creame of the crop in terms of pitching speeds. I know that in Texas there are more they hand full of kids throwing mid 90s. I believe Walden out of i think Highland Park, Texas hit 99 consistantly this summer

i dont think there is any kid in the nation that can throw 99 consistently, im not sure anyone in the bigs can do that..c'mon now

I saw Bowden pitch on three days rest and he was still bringing it in the low 90's, pretty impressive.
On the whole, however, i would say that the average fastball is about 76-79.

79mph sounds about right and Ive faced kbsbll30 a few times and Ive faced Doyle a few times too and in my opinion they are throwing VERY VERY close to each other,if Doyle hits 90 then kbsbll30 is hitting 90,I believe he has hit 90 before.

I believe that Walden was topping out at 97 this summer. Not 99 but still smoke.

Topping at 99 and cruising at 99 are two different things. Which are you talking about Goose?

99 consistantly? It's not that I don't believe it, but not even Bobby Jenks who has gone triple digits is a consitant 99, he is consistant at 97. Not to mention he is consistant at 97 at his young age in the pros which means u know he has adrenaline running out of his ears and any pitcher that has gone into a crucial game thats tied or close knows u throw a lot harder then normal. As for the original subject I'd say about 78-79 is the average and the hardest I have ever seen is when i batted against John Ely who was poppin low 90's, thats smoke when thats the first time you've faced 90 + and as a sophmore.

i heard via a scout that he was between 97-99 for seven innings. And MANY of his pitches hit 99. If the draft was today, im pretty sure he would be the no.1 pick, but time will tell. IF u talk to people who have seen him they say he is the second coming of Josh Beckett

A few years ago a kid name Colt Griffin was clocked at 100mph in high school in Texas. He's been in the minors the last 4 years. If you read Nolan Ryan's biography he was throwing 98mph as a junior in high school but was extremely wild at 145lbs!But if your really into speed "google" Steve Dalkowski -the fastest (and wildest) pitcher who ever lived. If they had radar guns in the early 60's this guy had to throw 103-107mph!

So does anyone know why the guy that has been in the minors for 4 yrs hasnt been in the majors yet???Kid has gotta have some electric stuff but why isnt he progressing anymore,now?

Colt Griffin is stuck in AA as a reliever. He has control problems and has an ERA in the mid 4's.

Yes the Tim Robbin's character, Nuke LaLoosh, in Bull Durham is partially based on Steve Dalkowski. If you read some of the articles about Steve, he blew out his arm fielding a bunt- and was never able to throw above 90 again. After his baseball career was over in the mid 60's, he was overcome by alcoholism, depression, and poverty. He was 5'11" 180lb but born with a "cannon" for an arm! In one article it was said that Steve threw a ball 450ft!

kirk man i dont think u hit 90.... u were playin us when u supposedly hit 90 ive caught a lot of college players throwing 90-92 and u werent close........ props for striking me out tho

Mark McCormick, the pitcher from Baylor and the Cardinals supplemental 1st round draft pick, hit 100 MPH a few times in high school.

The fastest I've seen in high school is about 93-94. That was coming out of the hand of Max Scherzer and Dave Phelps. However, not sure if it was actually 93-94 at the time. I just had heard these pitchers could get it up into the mid 90s. It sure did look 93-94, though.

Well, i could top out at 82, i probably throw 79-80 consistently. I would say I am average or slightly above. I've seen alot of high school pitchers and maybe only three or four have hit 90. For everyone who has said they hit 90 on this message board, go get a radar gun and do it again.
by the way: has Doyle picked up some velocity out of nowhere, because at our legion districts he was getting 85-86-87-and one or two 88s or 89s, not anywhere close to the 93 i've heard about. Not being critical, just skeptical. If he can throw 93, i would like to see it.

i used to have an old coach that played against this steve dalkowski guy and he said it was incredible what the man could do but he had alot of control problems and had a hot temper

I would say 79-80 is the average. There are a few that throw harder, but it is the off-speed pitches that make the pitcher. Most kids can hit the heat.

mhsballer1 ..... thats where doyle hits as a starter, but out of the bullpen he hits 90-93. First hit 93 at a showcase in Chicago for Legion. As a starter he can't bring it so hard for every pitch, because he's got to go deep into games. When he closes he can bring it every pitch not worrying about pitch count or anything else.
