Strange situation in a college game last night. Head coach calls time and signals to RF/1B umpire that he wants a righthander. Righthander trots out to mound. Pitching coach, who was in the dugout not the pen, realizes it is the WRONG righthander. Waves to bullpen and other righthander comes trotting out.
RF umpire APPARENTLY tells coach that pitcher one is already in the game. Pitcher had not thrown any warm ups, or been announced by the stadium announcer.
When does a pitcher officially enter the game? When the home plate umpire notes the change on his lineup card? This may be what happened, but head coach and RF ump never checked with the home plate umpire so I'm not sure.
