Since March, my son, a 2015 LHP, has been sending email communications on a very consistent basis to a handful of schools.  Most have generated responses and an email "conversation" has taken place in many cases.

My question is around phone calls.  At which point is it appropriate for my son to call a coach?  Should you wait for the coach to make the first call?  Should my son show the initiative? I want to be sensitive to the coaches and not overload them with communications but on the other hand, I want to be sure my son is marketing himself appropriately.

Any thoughts on if and when?

Thanks in advance for any advice and POV's!

If your son is a 2015, the coaches can't call him until July 1st.  Until then, he can call them...but if they don't answer, he can't leave a message and expect a call back...as they aren't allowed.  The organization my son plays for told us that once a coach starts to attach a phone number (either office....or especially cell), he is basically saying it's ok to call him....and if the conversation has been more than "hey, come to a camp" then it's ok to go ahead and call.  You'll get a pretty good idea on that first call if the coach is interested...and if he'd like your son to keep in touch by phone.

Along these same lines, are college coaches able to email back and forth with a HS player (rising Jr. in our case), or are there restrictions on email communication too?  Also, are there any differences on email communications specific to D1, D2 and D3? Son has had a couple of email exchanges with recruiting coordinator asking for summer tournament schedule updates, both were after son sent introductory email expressing general interest in program.

Solyent...this coming Sept 1st is the start of when D1's and D2's can email your son.   Up until then I believe they can only return your emails with general questions/comments....such as schedule request, camp info, etc....nothing specific with regard to your player...or what they think of him.    D3's are pretty much able to do whatever they want with regard to emails...even before July 1st.
