2020 is verbally committed. He's not going to an HA D3 (I know there are special considerations with that). Is there any reason not to apply as soon as we can? Do we wait for the NLI just to be certain? I know the Common App becomes available 8/1. My son would likely need some letters of recommendation from a GC or teacher so we'd have to wait until at least the school year started.

I'm bad at procrastinating ;-).

Depending on the school there are:

  • Early Decision (ED): *Binding, can only do this for one school.  Apply by ~Oct/Nov, get answer back in Dec
  • Early Action (EA): Non Binding no limit on # of schools.  Apply by ~Dec, get answer back in Jan
  • Regular Decision: Apply by Jan 1, hear back in ~ April

If your school has ED, I would go that route so you can have it all wrapped up with a bow before the holidays.

If, in the rare case, something unexpected were to go wrong with the baseball offer, that would be reason to get out of the ED restriction (it's really only morally binding, not legally, though that's just my opinion)

Just ask the coach. Some admissions start accepting kids in Sept/Oct after they've applied. Others wait until mid December to start sending back decisions. 2019 applied on Nov 1 deadline. He was accepted the following Monday. Regular students didn't hear back until Christmas time.

Unless he is a borderline NCAA qualifier or straight up lied to the coach about his grades/scores it won't be an issue, just a formality.

Coach told son to apply ED.  Coach sends the list over to admissions to be on the lookout.

(my co-worker told me, that a long time ago when you applied via paper, that the athletes applied on different colored paper than everyone else!)

Son applied Early Action at his school (no ED). And everything that he sent to admissions WAS placed in blue envelopes given to him by RC.

Wonder why the envelopes weren't crimson or green or orange, even.
