Senior RHP has offer to come play D3 but a couple
area D1's have shown interest. Both only had one
early commit and said they'll sign about 10
players for next season. May 1st deadline coming
for college deposits - he's accepted to both schools
and 3 more. Just wondering the timeline for when
the coaches start planning for next year. Conversations have been positive but no offers yet.

Welcome to the High School Baseball Web!

It's tough to generalize about the pace at which DI's fill their rosters; but, if each signed only one player in the fall, you'd think that they'd be pretty interested in signing additional players who are of genuine interest to them.

It seems to me that the deposit deadlines give your son plenty of justification to call the DI coaches who have shown interest, explain the deadline situation he faces, and ask them how likely it is that he'll receive an offer from them. When he does, he needs to be prepared to speak directly and specifically to the reasons why they're of sufficient interest to him that he's not yet accepted the offer from the DIII program.

Best of luck to him!
Really great advice so far, but I wanna reiterate baseballmomandcep's advice to not miss any deadlines for reserving his place in the school of his choice (D3?) if the D1 doesn't come through.

Put the deposit down on April 30 (or before). If the D1 dream school comes along after that and wants him, the coaches will get him a waiver for the May 1 deadline at their school.
Do not wait around for the D1s to offer. If they really want your son, they would have offered by now. I wouldn't worry about the deposit either to the D1. If they offer, their athletic departments can move things through the admissions department and take care of those details. Your son can tell the D1s that he already has an offer from the D3. See how they respond. If they tell you to wait, then they aren't really interested. This comes from my son's experience in the same situation near the end of the season.
