Great topic. Some great names listed. I could throw in a hundred more. The thing that strikes me – all of these guys listed (except maybe Ali) seem to have a common thread. They played with so much pure intensity and passion. None had flashy end zone dances, thirty step handshakes or double twist chest bumps, superman shirt-tear, point-at-my-name-on-my-jersey, emphatic first down points or any of the other extra curricular BS that goes on today. Nope. Pure sport. Raw emotion. Good old fashioned hand shakes, back slaps and, when there was real cause for celebration, a genuine arms-raised jump for joy. Yet, the games were more exciting... hmmm.

"Who did you worship as a kid and why for baseball and football, basketball and hockey" was the question.

Sorry webmaster. The answer was no one. Is that better? Sheesh. You asked a random question used to generate responses. Sorry it didn't generate the response you were looking for. Next time post rules.
"Idolize" might be a bit strong however this thread sure is bringing back some great memories...

Baseball: Johnny Bench - Brooks Robinson.

Pro Football: Bill Bergy - Fred Biletnikoff

College Football: Archie Griffin - Archie Manning

Pro Basketball: Oscar Robinson - Dave Cowens

College Basketball: Pistol Pete - Dan Issel

Golf: Jack Nicklaus - Arnold Palmer - Lee Travino

Swiming: Mark Spitz
Hockey - Bobby Orr (loved watching him; glad i was watching the day he scored the big goal and went flying)
Basketball - didn't watch much, but Austin Carr scored 61 once in NCAA tourney, so I was Austin Carr when i was at the park as a little kid shooting hoops by myself
Wrestling= Dan Gable

Football = anyone who ever a wore a Denver Bronco jersey.

Baseball = Pete and Roberto... I can't pick a favorite between the 2. They were very different type of players but i LOVED them both on that field.

Bum,

I recognize those names, though not in the NW.

I believe the Seattle Pilots got Bud Selig started in baseball. The club failed and became the Brewers.

I also remember Sonny Sixkiller playing QB in college. I think ESPN did something about him recently.

"Downtown" Freddie Brown played college basketball right down the road from us at the U of Iowa, after playing JC ball at Burlington JC in Iowa. He's from Milwaukee. Maybe one of the best clutch long range shooters I ever saw.
That poster got me off track! Smile

Baseball: Pete Rose for the way he played the game; Harmon Killebrew, Carl Yaztrzemski, Nolan Ryan--born 40 miles down the road-named my oldest son Jordan Ryan after him. Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle, but they were a little older and so good they seemed from a different planet.

Football: Roger Staubach and Earl Campbell. Saw Campbell in high school--a beast even then.

Sorry to throw you off track there Three Bagger.
As I stated earlier my baseball pick of Henry Aaron I failed to mention a few others:
Football - Walter Payton, he was so smooth
Basketball - Larry Bird
Boxing - Cassius Marcellus Clay, loved watching him bob and weave.
