No way we let a parent keep the scorebook. Im sure we have some parents that would do a great job and would be honest and fair. The problem is it could cause problems for the player of the parent. We have a student scorekeeper that we teach how to keep the book. Whenever there is a question of wether its a hit or error we tell her how to score it. Any questions about era or rbis we step in right away and just tell her how to score it. Our players know that no one discusses hits or errors and the coaches make those decisons. Its not hard to just say "Ericka score that a hit". Just my opinion
I do the announcing/books for my sons games.

If there are any questionable plays where I am not sure, I ask the coach. After the game, I enter it into the computer and give the stats to the coach the next day. He also has me call the results into the various newspapers.

Only once have I had someone ask me about a call I made. We double checked with the coach and I was correct.

I have done this for 5 years now, this may be my last or I may stick around after my son graduates to do the announcing and stats.

He trusts me and I do my best not to break that trust. I try to be unbiased, but I do make mistakes which is why I double check with him.

Be prepared for the coach to beg you to continue announcing / scoring after your son graduates. You sound too good to be true.
I also kept the books for the HS team and the summer team. In my opinion I was keeping the book for the coach and any time there was a question regarding a hit or an error, I would look to the coach for the “proper” call. Coaches will also award wins and saves to pitchers that are not always “exactly right” but in my opinion that is their call. I would also call in the games to the local paper, and follow with a fax copy when I got home. I would also include a “write-up” about the game that the paper would use on occasion. After I faxed the newspaper, I would enter the score sheet into turbo stats and generate an updated stat sheet for the coach, which I delivered to his office at 8:00 AM the following morning. The only times this situation got awkward was the times different media people would call the head coach for stats on my son during his recruitment. He would always refer them to his scorekeeper (which happened to be me). No, I didn’t pad the stats...even if I did ...they are meaningless!! Wink

We have a volunteer Coach, Mr. Steve Bay, and he keeps our book and calls in our stats. He has a couple of rules.

1. He judgement is never in question.
2. He won't discuss anything with anyone about anything at all. Seriously, don't speak to him during a game!
3. He wants to be in the dugout but be left alone.
4. He will never sit!
5. He calls all stats in and they won't be "corrected" after he calls them in.

Coach Bay loves the game. He is a purist. He wouldn't fudge a stat even if I asked him to. As he once said before he took the position, "the stats take care of themselves. Everything balances out and so, he will call them as he sees them."
Our HS has a retired gentleman who looks at keeping score as a hobby he gets to indulge in the spring. He's unconnected with any of the players. About as unbiased as you can get.

While several parents share the task for scoring our club team ... as a group, we all get along so well that any "grey zone" play turns into a friendly discussion in the gallery, and if we can't agree on it, we just ask the coach ... it's his book and his word is final. We've never had a case of anything being inappropriately scored to help, or hurt, a player's stats. I will often score games on my Palm device ... but before I generate any stats out of that, I always verify against the official book that they are scored identically.

Good, I'll know who you are when my sons team plays your sons this summer. (I'll stop over and say "hi".) At least, I believe I saw NBWest on my sons schedule! Smile
There are times when I will read the recaps of games that I umpire in the local papers. Very often, I can't even recognize the game from the account that was called in by the HS scorer.

A 3 for 4 day in the paper was a 1-2 day with 2 errors in the game and a 2 hit shutout was a 6 hit game. Errors given to fielders seldom show up in the game recap.

Wins go to the wrong pitchers and saves are given in non save situations. Local Newspaper accounts should carry very little weight. Its a leading cause of why I hear, "whatever happened to XX player??" He was great, well, at least according to the local newspaper.

Exactly. Who really cares about high school stats anyway? C'mon really. Forget about hits and batting averages in high school. Anyone that has an eye for baseball can see who's consistently hitting line drives into the gaps or raking it over the fence! Other than that, on base percentage, extra base hits and strikeouts will tell you alot.... The rest is for the parents and players to argue over if they want to...
Come on Teacherman Frown. How can you compare the MLB scoring to HS. How many scoring mistakes are made during 162 game MLB season for 30+ teams. You're intent here has to be instill un-necessary controversy on the worthless point you made.

Posters, please do not satisfy his entertainment needs.

Wrong.

It's a big topic with Tony LaRussa and Dave Duncan of the Cardinals.

I'm generally a LaRussa critic but he is right on on this matter.

Time and time again things that should be scored errors are scored as hits. Leads to higher ERA's.

The official scorers throw out hits like there are no consequences to their decisions.

Don't believe me investigate.

4Falcons,

I just checked our schedule, and we do not play you guys this year. <aybe we'll see you at state Wink . Geoff is no longer at St. Norbert's so I won't see you at chads game either.

Coach Knight,

Thank you for the kind words. Get me a season pass to the Ludington Ferry so I can get to Michigan easily and we'll see what I can do to help. Wink

Actually I enjoy it so much I think I will stick around next year after my son graduates.

If you have ever been to a stress management class they tell you to find a "happy Place" to focus on when the stress gets too much. Mine is the High School baseball field.
