Then try to imagine making those same moves at a dinner party at the home of one of those members. Walk into the dinner party during cocktail hour, and introduce yourself to a bunch of people who seem to already have known each other for years. Quickly share a few strong opinions in a strong voice, and maybe a joke that comes out wrong. If someone comments in a disapproving way, let 'em have it! Surely all the other people at the dinner party will see that YOU are correct, and rush to your defense!
The above description is not meant as reproach to any single member, but I think a lot of the Old Timers at this site can confirm (and have said before) that this is how it sounds, or looks, or feels, when a newcomer "gets into it" with longer-term members.
Old-Timers (including me) aren't perfect. But Old Timers built this house, they take care of this house, they own this house. Newcomers, c'mon in! You are welcome visitors in our house, and hopefully after a while, it will become your house, too.
Now, back to baseball:

I extend my hand in friendship to TG in the hopes he can see these few high-and-tight fastballs early on has only been a lesson in respect for the game. And TG, maybe we can now finally move on. Consider the wise move and accept our friendship and "keep it between the lines".

TG writes: First, thank you for bringing the thread back to baseball. Your questions should be the basis for some abstract thinking given the nature of baseball. There could be several correct responses based on the reasoning.
For failure to be part of the discussion I'll assume you're talking about dinker hits, bloops, pops, flies, etc., not line drives. In that one at-bat it's failure unless the hitter gets lucky and the ball drops or a runner advances. But in the long run if the player is hitting a lot oppo dinkers he's not going to be successful. That would be failure in his practice and approach.
Activity would be swinging the bat. Results would be making something happen with the activity. If a player crushes a ball at a fielder the play yields a negative result. But you know the same activity will yield positive results most times. That falls under "can't win them all."
If we wanted to get real esoteric, we could say the hitter who pops out the opposite way learns something in his at-bat that yields positive results the next at-bat. But we can't be sure on an at-bat to at-bat basis. A hitter can look bad hitting twice a game and go to the Hall of Fame off his third at-bat
jmo, but a coaching philosophy (esp youth) that classifies players and their actions as failures most of the time needs re-thunk a bit

IMO, coming to a message board any message board is like going for a swim in a pool. I know for me, I always stick my foot in first to check out the water. That determines whether I jump in or take my time in getting used to it, taking my time until I feel comfortable with the temperature.
And if I get my hair wet, I know that it's most likely my fault, not those splashing around me, for not being prepared.

I wouldn't call this a debate. It's a ****ing contest. A never ending "I smack back" battle of the wills.

I rarely post in this forum and genrally hang out in the Texas Forum (yes, TR, I see your occasion contributions ), but I did feel somewhat compelled to throw something into the pot here.
All parents want their player to be seen in the best possible light. Sometimes, and my wife and I have been guilty of this, a parent think they can talk their player into being better than he really is. While this is a mistake, it is a mistake because the parent loves their child and wants badly for them to succeed.
My oldest is a junior in HS and a solid player. As he has developed as a player and I have aged, I came to realize that if he, or any player for that matter, is good enough to advance to the next step, they will get that opportunity if they want it. Nothing I can say in the stands will alter that, one way or the other.
Perhaps a focus on the more weighty issues by parents will help with this perspective. I truly hope my son gets his chance to play in college, but something happened this week that tells me he on the right track, regardless.
A teacher friend of my wife came up to my wife and offered an unsolicited comment about our son this week. This friend told my wife that her daughter knew our son, and told her mother that "he is a great kid. He doesn't party or drink, he is always nice to me and I never really see him doing anything wrong".
After that, I decided I wasn't going to worry about his future again. He has it figured out, with or without baseball...something to think about.

I know that parent's are a big equation to weather a child has a chance to go to college.
Weather a baseball player gets a chance to play in HS and Beyond. Is up to the player, and his are her ability.
Nothing as parent's can we do to help with that except keep them busy playing there sport of choice.
It's there journey, were only there for support.

Geeze...I think we might break our own arms trying to pat ourselves on the back...Hate to do this once again....But it needs to be said...with ALL due respects, and COMPLETE understanding of where the other 99% are coming from...
Never was and will never be a fan of old guard, old boy/old girl networks, of exclusivity, of networking, of hall-of-fames, of popularity contests, of celebrity over substance, of promotion by longevity, of double standards, of playing time by longevity. All that leads to respect based as much on how long, political affiliations and kiss-ups than it does on information, or truth, or content, or performance.
Often/recently see inane posts by the "right" posters that are soundly revered, until someone realizes that "the emperor has no clothes" and then its a quick and mutually cheery backup by the whole posse. On the other side, have seen some very good posts "gang tackled" simply because they come from a politically incorrect, or newbie source. Have seen The "right" posters argue themselves in complete circles of logic trying to make certain posters wrong.
Here is the metafore...
Open position on the team...freshman arrives...obviously brings game...clearly good enough to start...but the team is not happy, wants a less talented Junior who has been waiting to get that spot...the team makes life difficult for the freshman simply because he is a freshman, not because he lacks talent...coach/moderator understands freshman sits and gets frustrated. Understandable right? Or Unreasonable? OK if you son is the junior, right? What if your son were the freshman?
Again, I understand where we are coming from, and I'd say that for the most part we do a good job letting the information do the talking....but I'd also caution against reading our own press clippings.

I hope you can step back a bit and do a little self assessment, because from my point of view, as someone who has absolutely no ill will toward you at all, and who welcomes what you can bring to this board, I think you have regularly used this board to in one way or another brag about yourself, your son and your daughter.
Bottom line, that is what people are reacting to. It seems that quite often your posts are thinly veiled excuses to create "oh by the way" reasons to brag about how hard nosed you are, how successful you are, how talented your son and daughter are, etc.
There are legions of people on this board whose sons are unbelievably talented in this game we all love. They have excelled at a level that my son can now only dream of. Yet, unless directly asked, they hardly ever mention a thing, and then usually only in a PM.
I have learned so much from these folks over the years about appropriate parent demeanor. I simply suggest that you take a step back, do an honest self-assessment of why you are here.

There are legions of people on this board whose sons are unbelievably talented in this game we all love. They have excelled at a level that my son can now only dream of. Yet, unless directly asked, they hardly ever mention a thing, and then usually only in a PM.
I have learned so much from these folks over the years about appropriate parent demeanor. I simply suggest that you take a step back, do an honest self-assessment of why you are here.
If you do, I think you will find the folks here are VERY welcoming, helpful, informative, and yes, even indulgent of the occasional brag!

What is also great about the board is that there are many very nice people here that provide great advice and experiences, even if their son may not be the best athletes.

Agree Rob. This forum works because of mutual respect and heartfelt advice from people who have been there and done that. I don't want to read a p#$#ing contest. My observation is that newcomers questions are welcomed and answered as patiently and authoritatively as possible. Mine always have. Listen, learn and contribute if you can. But in an uncertain world, let's have fun with baseball.

Our parents dine together and hang out during our weekend trips--in fact my self and my coaching staff have had dinner with many of them
They are all with us for the same purpose---to see each others son succeed

Got a couple other offers, took two official Cookfest visits but not a good fit and not my dream Cookfest...
Now I see that there are 35 Cooksters...and I am worried...Last year I know there were 45 Cooksters on the roster...Now isn't there some new rules come down from the NCAA, Parental Cookfest Study committee...regarding the New Coookfest roster sizes? 35 Cookfesters maximum?...

Yes, you can accept moose without losing your eligibility.
However I heard you have to stay away from the cooking channel, caught cheating if you copy a recipe.
Also, coaches do allow the use of alcohol in all recipes.
Don't get caught using those fake margarines or hydrogenated oils, might show up in a urine test after competition and could make your head one size larger!

I will be carefull trying to "cook on" without significant meat money. You could end up being a cupboard organizer, or even worse, forced to transfer to a Wendys or White Castle.
Keep in mind, if you can't be one of the 27 or 8 walk ons in a cook fest there are many other avenues to consider. Seafood Fests, Harvest fests, holiday fests, chili fests, cajun fests, pumpkin fests, spring fests all over good programs and opportunities.
One might even get lucky and eventually get drafted for the BIGFEST.

for those of us not able to make it in the ncaa cookfest, i've found the eatfest much easier to get into. naia - national assoc. of insatiable appitites. the food isn't as good ,and no meal money.but the education is every bit as good. i have been practicing day and night for the holliday season, i'm about 2 pork chops away from 280 and feel really good about the t-day bowl.

Yikes I forgot about the NAIA (National Assosiation of Insatiable Appetities). Some people think that this program is not as good as the larger cookfest programs. Like comparing Longhorn's to Burger King, but I find some of them more equivalent to Outback.
