My son is a pitcher, 6'1", 175, RHP. He had a nerve issue in his right elbow where after about 50 pitches, the muscle was rolling over the nerve and would start to irritate him. So, he had surgery during his high school junior year season to move the nerve. His high school coach suggested he do it then so that he would be fully healed and ready to throw in time for fall ball. So, he's training this summer and getting his speed back, etc., but he's not playing any summer baseball.

We have never taken him to any camps or done anything other than let him play high school baseball. So, he's never had any exposure except to our local baseball high school coach. I'm wondering if he has a chance of being recruited or playing in college if he isn't seen by anyone until his senior year. We can't afford to take him to all these different camps to show off his talent, so we're relying on fall ball and his senior year season.

He has decent grades (3.3-3.5), and his SAT's total was 1600 (1050 read/math), and every coach that has worked with him since he was a little guy has remarked that he has an excellent work ethic on the field and is a team leader.

Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you!

Exposure is going to be difficult. By missing this summer he's missing the primetime showcasing period for his class. Spring of high school senior year is most likely too late to be noticed. What is his talent level? It has a bearing on the situation. Don't post his stats. What is his cruising and maximum velocity?

There are showcases and camps in the fall right up to December. These situations usually work better for the D3 prospect. D1s tend to have their roster filled by August. You need to project when your son will healthy and rehabbed enough to throw full velocity. Contact the coaches of college programs he's interested in playing, explain the situation and ask how to get in front of them when he's healthy.

In these situations you will need to see how he looks in the fall. The Arizona Fall Classic is perfect for him if he will be ready. Go to Academic Game. Fall Scout ball is also a big opportunity, but those teams will be having tryouts in July/August.

If not then likely candidate would be JC's, or as RJM pointed out DIII's. If he is a hard thrower then he could be picked up as late as August of the incoming year as schools deal with loosing draft picks, but usually they are for cases like your son who had some sort of injury and has ++ skills.
