Rob Nenn pitched the last 1/2 of the 2002 season including the playoffs and World Series with a serious shoulder injury. His velocity was so far down the Giants turned on the radar gun in PacBell when he pitched. Multiple surgeries later he was never able to recover.
Nenn, Radtke and others are making a lot of money, have access to the very best doctors, and know the risks. They also have guaranteed contracts. Little doubt that there are players who would shut it down with a lot less injury factor...no I was not singling out Armando Benitez.
Having watched the impact of injury this year, I have learned the extent of pain that some professional players endure. I know up close and personal the challenges faced over a 144/162 game schedule, both physically and especially mentally.
Knowing now, what I did not in March, I admire Radtke beyond words. Would I like the organization to shut him down and do what might be best for him? Absolutely. But he is paid extremely well and knows, or should know, the downside risks for all of this. When you are at that level and have access to that type of information, I believe each player can make good and correct decisions for himself.
The same cannot/should not be the standard at any other level of baseball, professional or otherwise.
