At this point in the year,my High School is about 3 weeks away from the first spring scrimmage.I know that I have won the starting job on the freshman team, and likely the Junior Varsity team.I will likely be splitting time on Varsity with the other freshman catcher.

Next year,I am a frontrunner for the starting job, along with the other freshman. What do you guys think is necessary in my freshman campaign in order to give me the edge going into next year?I realize statistics are not heavily valued in HS ball,so I think it will come down to who ever knows our staff better.

A good portion of you guys have been through this experience with yourselves or sons,so what did they do that pushed themselves over the top in games?

futurecatcher - Sounds like you're enthusiastic about your season and that's a great start! I would caution you to never "assume" that you've got the starting anything. Always play and practice like you think you don't. Be respectful of coaches and teammates. While you may hear that HS stats aren't heavily valued, I think that's by colleges. Your coaches are going to care who can hit, who can support their teammates when they're down, who can lead on and off the field, who can perform in the classroom, who can make their throws to second, etc.

Best of luck to you this spring and I'm sure you'll get some very valuable insight by hanging around here some.
My son was a freshman last year and going into tryouts thought he was going to be on the varsity team, he thought he had played well enough in the fall to win the coaches over.. Well he was initially put on the JV because the varsity had 1 sr catcher and 2 junior catchers, he wasnt happy but he didnt give up. One junior catcher had arm problems and one didnt have the grades.

Before the first game of the season my son was practicing with the varsity and by the third game had taken the spot from the senior. He responded by leading the team in hitting and voted the rookie of the year and MVP by the coaches. Even with all that he did last year he will have to fight for his job this year. Nothing is guaranteed in HS baseball, you have to earn it all.
