Well... this thread has been lots of fun but... I've got some good news and some bad news...

First the bad...

My son's league has folded due to financial considerations. They have had terrible weather in Columbia this year with almost half the games rained out thus far. This has also diminished their attendance considerably.

The good news...

As much as my son loved the opportunity there and the people, he was getting increasingly homesick. He especially missed not being home for Thanksgiving and was not looking forward to missing Christmas. He is happy that things have turned out the way they have. Happy and thrilled for the opportunity but also happy to be coming home for Christmas (probably by this Friday or Saturday). He'll be home for a few weeks and then spend the rest of the winter in Myrtle Beach. Indeed a tough life, but someone has to do it Big Grin

I have appreciated everyone's support in this thread. I'll update it occasionally the rest of this winter leading up to spring training in Florida. Still looking forward to hearing from others who have posted here as well

Hey CD! That will be great to have your son home, even better that he wants to be there!

What city will he be training in? Are you planning on a trip down? Would love to run ito you!

Their spring training home is in Port Charlotte Florida which is also the home of their high A ball team the Charlotte Stone Crabs - owned by Cal Ripken believe it or not.

I think we very well may be down in March. Maybe we can catch a UT game while we are down there or run into each other at a spring training game somewhere.
My son arrived home safely last night so I wanted to thank everyone for their prayers.

I tried to make the thread interesting to read. Posting stats is boring. I think people enjoyed the thread and I thank everyone's participation.

humbledone - if you are Shep, you ought to know by now that you are not welcome here at the hsbbweb. Please do not post in this thread anymore.
Thanks everyone from the bottom of my heart for your good wishes. I truly believe that when you send out good wishes and thoughts for others that they come back to you ten fold in kind.

Here is a great Christmas song from one of the great female singers of all time. Go to youtube and post your favorite Christmas or Holiday song as well... Merry Christmas to all!

I'll be Home for Christmas
CD,
Great to hear Tyler is home with your family for the Holidays. Bet he has a lot of stories to share...possibly not all Winter League baseball related from those photos. Wink Big Grin Eek
Just read on Facebook that our son's college baseball teammate and roommate will arrive home in about 5 days...from Afghanistan. Michael has been there since June in a very important and critical civilian capacity.
From reading his Mother's post, and seeing the new photo of Michael sitting on top of a hillside in Afghanistan, I could literally feel the thrill and excitement in her words.
Sometimes I wonder why I still read and post on the HSBBW since I am truly old(I prefer experienced or "seasoned") and perhaps "dated" in our experiences.
It is because our sons/children are shaping their lives and for some, our world, in different ways. That shaping and reading/learning about it can be the most important part of my day.

Son got a call from one of the winter leagues and I thought I would consult my primary source of baseball knowledge to add a little color to my understanding of the topic. I remember reading this thread so long ago and it brought back many memories. I wish CD's photos had made the transition to the new website. Thanks.

Have there been any new experiences down south in the past four plus seasons?

My son had other plans this off-season but said he might consider it next year.

(Since it's his business, I prefer to remain anonymous and created a new monicker.)

Where might he be asked to play? Mine played in Puerto Rico and loved it, last winter in Mexico which was a hoot.  Besides the huge amount of money they give Americans, not ever place is paradise.  Dominican is the place to play for best exposure.

Its a slippery slope, if you do well it will help, if not, it could hurt.

And keep in mind there might not be a next year.

JMO but free agents don't turn down going to the Dominican.  Could have gone for a month. That's where you go for a job.

The older he gets with prior injury and with no mlb experience makes it more difficult. It would have been good to play against the best of the best to help prove he possibly could.  That's where future and present major leaguers play.

Not sure why you asked if he wasn't going, but I figured out who you are so I get it.  Your identity is safe with me.

Best of luck to your son.
