While I guess one could use it for that purpose my guess is you would end up with some undesirable mechanical issues.

Wood bat has a smaller sweet spot so in theory by using wood it makes your swing better if you are able to square that up a metal bat should be easier due to larger sweet spot.

Indoors the sound is an extra benefit. Son swings a Nike Aero Fuse. That bat is so loud it feels like my ears are bleeding.

Thank you for clarifying that Smile
Rottweilers,

Wood bats tend to have their balance point a bit further out from the knob than a metal bat of the same weight and length. This give them a different 'swing feel' and places the ideal point of contact (sweet spot) about 1/2" to 1" further out from the knob as well. Also, wood bats are best used when contact is made strictly along the edge grain. This adds an important element to the swing that young hitters need to learn.

In short, wood bats require more discipline and better control to use properly.
Rottweilers,
Someone mentioned that wood has a smaller sweet spot. Additionally, wood has tremendous feel. You get instant feedback when you hit the sweet spot and when you don't. You are also penalized more when you don't in regards to how far the ball travels. So, it makes for great training and re-enforcement tool.

On average, wood bats are just a bit heavier than -3 (although there are exceptions), thus it is fairly common to be swinging a slightly heavier bat when one chooses wood in the same length as their metal bat.
