I'm so confused by all this recruiting stuff. My son got an e-mail from a coach wondering when he could come hit and throw for him (DII). That school is close to another school he is interested in (DII) so he e-mailed the coach from the other school to see if he could come visit the campus and work out for them the same day (4.5 hour drive - trying to knock out two birds with one trip). That coach said he'd love him to come visit the campus, but he can't work out with them as it is against NCAA rules. Some of you more familiar than me please enlighten me. What exactly are the rules for working out for a coach on their campus please? Thanks in advance for the help.

See 13.11.2 in the D2 Manual.
Probably the restriction you're looking for is that the tryout must occur during a high school term other than the one(s) containing the traditional season of the sport. For the school districts where we live, that means D2 schools can't by rule provide a tryout now, because it is the spring term.

Some schools follow the rules more closely than others.

I agree with 3FingeredGlove, my son had to get permission to miss a day for an official visit in the fall. I believe it was November. The school brought in several players at a time during their offseason to work out. I also understood that you were limited to 2 hours of actual working out or trying out with the team. That two hours did NOT include or apply to the time spent on campus tours, etc.

My son has done several visits.  Certain schools wanted to have him throw (pitcher) others just got him on campus.  He specifically asked one school if they wanted him to workout during the visit - they said no, we have your video, just come meet the team during the workout.

Others have asked him to workout (several last fall and now this winter).  Mainly D2's.

So I'm confused as most on what the rules are.  Is it 'term' or season?  Our HS season has not started, however the academic term has.
