It depends on date break the state uses. Our state uses September 1. Therefore a summer birthday will make a kid one of the youngest. Any birthday after March would be second half of the year.quote:I kind of put August and beyond as young. May to July is fairly normal.
I just saw your last post Cadad. If I read it right you have one spot left on varsity. They are determined to be equal in talent before the start of the HS season. One is a soph one is a junior. Can you guys move up and down on rosters in Cal? You know JV to Varsity , Varsity to JV? If so I would put one on JV the other on Varsity. I would rotate them and give each kid a couple of opportunities and then evaluate them. If they still did not separate I would put the soph on Varsity. I have more time to work with him. The Junior would go to JV if that is allowed in Cal.
quote:I was just wondering, at this point, until he does have significant growth, if we should hold off on attending another showcase, esp. if they don't even factor his age vs. his grad year.
I had the same question last year and took it to Perfect Game. To the organization's credit, they recommended holding off for about a full year in order to give my son additional time to physically develop. When my son did his 2nd PG showcase, he had frankly not bulked up significantly since the 1st one. However, it was beneficial for him to do the second one as it was in the summer following his junior year and it helped get him on the radar screen.
that seems odd, you'd send a Jr (w/DI potential) to JV who was by your admission NOT beat out, just so you could work with a soph (who's could not yet be recruited) ... bet that would get you a few conferences w/ parent & AD.
who is running/working your jv's anyway?
a volunteer football coach
if no confidence in freshman & jv coaches why have them?

Sorry guys but I deleted several of my posts. Coach May or someone else had a good point in another thread that what seems like an impartial analysis to one person could hurt a player's or parent's feelings.
Pudgemom, I PM'd you back. Just wanting to make sure you got it.

My son is very young for his grade - Sept. birthday. We use an Oct.1 start. One suggestion, we started playing him up at about age 11. It bothered me some b/c I felt like he could have been the "stud" on an 11 year-old team instead of just a good one with a great bat on a 12 year old team. Sometimes it was hard. My husband said he needed to play up b/c those were the kids he would have to compete with in high school. In the end he played up, worked his tail off and it paid off b/c he made the team as a freshman. He will graduate in May and start college at age 17.
