First Time to See This, Win/Save Question

In HS, one of the requirements for a save is that the pitcher is not also the winning pitcher.9-6-7b

... unless the reliever enters with the bases loaded, in which case a 4 run lead qualifies since he's facing the tying run.

Heck, it could be a 5 run lead since the potential tying run needs to be on deck.

So this happens tonight.

Starting pitcher against up throws 6-1/3 (over 90 pitches) and swaps places with 1b in a 7 all tie.

In bottom 10, leading 9-7 and two runners on with two outs, they swap the starting P from 1b back to mound to get the final out and a save.

I don't believe the winning pitcher can get the save. The starter sat for what was probably 45-60 minutes and the coach put him back on the mound? If your son is a pitcher run hard, run fast. Get away from this coach. He cares more about winning than pitcher's arms.

In this case, the reliever got the win because the starter left the mound with the game tied and the reliever was the pitcher of record when they regained the lead.  Starter/Closer gets the save because he records the final out with the winning run at the plate.

It just seems weird to say that the starter went 6-2/3 and gets a save.

And yes, the starter played first base for at least 45 minutes after throwing over 90 pitches, only to return to the mound to get the last out.  I agree....sad.
