Hello, does anyone have any experiences or thoughts on either school/team?  Both also have the major my son is interested in.

Anyone have any thoughts on the team, coach Cummins or Coach Ralston, their recruiting practices, etc?  My son attended a SFSU showcase this past weekend, I thought he performed well and he def likes the campus and location.

Thanks in advance.

Don't know much about the coaches, but here's my take itch just a quick look. Both had decent recrds last year. Both schools depend heavily on transfers, CSU 22/33 & SFSU 16/27 so make sure junior would have a shot.

Bad news, DII get 9 schollys, good news total cost for both around $20-$24k. My guess is that most of that $$$$ goes to the transfers, but could be wrong.

Has junior been recruited by these two schools or just invited to camps. Makes a big difference and it hold be easy to figure out. Saw you play at ...... And liked ..... Or you have been identified by our staff as a prospect come to this camp.

Go where they love you and you get a shot to play.

Doesn't answer your specific question hvavanajay.  But just echoing Picked off, from our limited but somewhat bracing experience,  it seems like Cal State DII's are sort of D1 wanna be's almost.  It starts with the fact that the competition for DI spots in California is really really intense.  Far more good to very good players than there are spots. Add the fact that many of the  programs here are  really competitive.  Then add the further fact that  except for a few of the Cal States the highly competitive D1 schools are academically demanding -- with high to very high academic standards.

In that environment, it seems to me that the Cal State  D2 programs thrive on recruiting  players who  may not have quite the stuff either baseball wise or grade wise for the highly  competitive California D1's but are still pretty  close to being D1 level players.  I'm betting that  most of them could play D1 somewhere or other in the country if they were willing to travel.

Which is just to say that  getting a  roster  spot in one of these places is tough.    Especially since there are also so many good JC transfers competing for them too.   Looking at  all the Cal State D2's very few of them seem to place a premium on recruiting frosh.  If I were you, I would directly and quickly follow up with the coaches about your players chances there.   Just so you know where you really stand with them.  Some of these guys seem up front and honest.   Hopefully these two are.

I can not speak with any great wisdom about each of the baseball programs.

However, you better understand the nature of the school you are attending. SFSU is an urban state university; the student body is a reflection of it's location. Remember you will be a student more than you will be a baseball player.

CSUEB was a D3 a few years ago. The transition was more about finding local competition than a change in the program (there are no D3's in NorCal). CSUEB is more of a suburban campus and as such you have a broader reach in the student body.

The comments about these schools being transfer schools is very accurate. I can not speak first hand about the programs, I would be surprised if less than 90% of there players (the ones that play) are transfer students.

Before I get too excited about either program, I would spend a day on the campus. Go to a few classes, eat in the dining common. If after a day you find this appealing, then go pro active with the baseball programs.

Havanajay;

You have selected an outstanding group of schools. For 20 years I have watched the teams play at Sonoma State.

Mike Cummins at SF State was the former coach at Santa Clara and a good friend.

The Assistant coach at Cal State Hayward, Darren Lewis is a former ML player have improved the program.

Head Coach Ralston managed in the Minor Leagues.

SSU has annually 3 "drop downs" from Division 1 schools and 50% of the travel roster

are JC transfers.

The "key" is where you play during the summer before you enter college and after you are in College.
