Upon further review....If Oscar Smith can get out of this week 3-1 that would have to be considered an outstanding result.  Jeez!

This is the time when everyone starts to find out what they really have.  As last year proved though a bad week in early May which used to be a season ender really just is ...a bad week in early May now.

You might be able to improve positioning but playing your best in 3 weeks is the key to a season now since no one is eliminated by regular season baseball anymore.

3/4 years ago, 4 of this group would have been home in three weeks: WB, GF, NR, GB, OS, IR, KF and Hickory.  It is not unreasonable to think 4 or more might make it to regionals now and that 2 or 3 might get beyond that.

I have not confirmed this, but have been told that the Kings Fork vs. Denbigh game is under review.  Again, I do not have all of the facts, but here is what I'm told:

KF and Denbigh were tied 1-1 going into the top of the 7th.  KF scores 8 runs to take a 9-1 lead with two outs, in the top of the 7th.  Denbigh coach then goes to umpires and says that his players cannot see due to lack of light.  The umpires obliged, therefore calling the game.  Because the inning was not completed, the game then defers to the previous completed inning, which is a tied score at 1-1 after six.  Game over.  Not to be continued.  Tie ballgame.

I do not know how it all went down.  I do not know what time it was when the game was called.  I do not know if there was or wasn't plenty of light.  I do not know what the ruling is, if there has, in fact, been a ruling of any kind.  I also do not know if this falls under "conference" ruling, or "VHSL" ruling.  I don't know if the "conference" even has any rules to cover this.

Does anyone know any more about this?

Curious.  How does a 1-1 game that starts at 5:30 or so run out of light in the 7th inning when the sun is setting about 8:30 this time of the year?  I would expect a reasonably clean game for 1-1 that would get to the 7th inning in something north of 1:30 but less that 2 hours.

That would put the game at 7 to 7:30 going to the 7th.  Lot of light left at that time.  Sounds odd, is this a common problem at that school?

It looked like Grassfield was going to take this game but once again Western Branch pulled it off in the late innings.

In the bottom of the first, with the score 0-0, WB loaded the bases with three straight hits.  Smith, the GF pitcher, induced a comebacker and GF turned a 1-2-3 double play, followed by a groundout to end the inning.

In the top of the 2nd, Austin Obenhauer (sp?) singled with 1 out, reached third on an errant pickoff attempt by Colin Selby, the WB pitcher, and scored courtesy of a sac fly to put GF up 1-0.

In the top of the 4th, GF batter Andrew Bullock hit a solo homer to right field to put GF up 2-0.

WB finally scored in the bottom of the 5th.  Rufus Hurdle reached on a fielder’s choice, advanced to 2nd when Jordan Mason walked and scored on a Grant Miaorana single.  With one out and two runners on, Alex Abbey’s hard liner was caught by the first baseman who turned an unassisted double play to end the inning.

Going into the bottom of the 7th, WB was down 2-1.  With one out, Mason singled up the middle, advanced to second on a ground out and scored when the defense mishandled a ball Abbey batted to the first base area.

Selby, pitching in his 8th inning of work, walked the first GF batter in the top of the 8th but retired the next three.  Jeff Butler led off the bottom of the 8th with a double.  GF issued an intentional walk to Garrett Marchand, Conor Rhem sac bunted Butler and Marchand to 3rd and 2nd.  GF issued another intentional walk, this time to Selby, to load the bases.  With two outs and bases loaded, Mason hit a slow chopper towards first which the GF pitcher could not handle, allowing Mason to reach first and Butler to score the winning run.
