16u team looking to fill the last few spots

Interesting piece in mlbtraderumors.com today on the oldest and youngest on MLB opening day rosters... copied below. Notably, only three players are under 21. I fully understand that there is a development period (real, perceived and driven by service years and the system). Personally, I think blowing up this model and allowing more of the younger talent to play on the big stage would be a tremendous boost for the game. Not trying to be too clever. Lot's of talent and if he's got it working he can be very good. In the movie Susan Sarandan has Nuke LaLoosh breathing through his lizard eyes (think Fernando Valenzuela) to help him relax and pitch better.

PG - have studied both quite a bit...there are similarities, and some big differences....and when you break down video and watch it at real time speed, and frame by frame, many will see what they want / think they see, so you really have to break it down as objectively as possible. I think Kershaw is a classic example of letting pitchers know that except for very few pitchers the leg lift, up to its apex is of very little benefit...Fernando Rodney is another example...Kershaw could eliminate...

Supposedly John Bushart at Pierce College in the San Fernando Valley in Northern Los Angeles is a very well respected pitching coach. He is also the head coach these days so I don't know how involved he gets in the pitching coach duties. His best known student is probably Jim Garland, his cousin.

It was 114 during warm ups before a summer varsity game in the San Fernando Valley in good ol' So Cal on Wednesday. It cooled down to a balmy 109 at game time. So we were given a literal warm up for Peoria. Yep it was 114 when we arrived in Peoria at about 6:00 pm. We drove the 1 block to the theater near our hotel and watched Incredible Hulk. It was still 104 degrees this evening in Peoria, Arizona at 10:30 pm. We stocked our mini fridge with a case of water and gatorade then turned the...

Re: Middle IF working the runner at 2B

I used to have opportunities to talk to the St. Louis Cardinals often. One thing that Fernando Vina taught me was that every infielder should draw a line or arc in the dirt which is their reference for both holding runners and working pickoffs. We've done so ever since and set that line through working with the pitching staff. For example, since it is an arc the 2nd baseman can move to the arc behind the baseline. This gives the runner the impression that they are being held. As the pitcher...

As far as recognition for less heard of schools goes, Fernando Hernandez of North Dallas hit a home run and 2 doubles. Add this to the fact that he picked up the win on the mound in a 15-3 thumping of Thomas Jefferson and you've got a pretty solid game from a guy you probably haven't heard of.

Oldslugger, you shouldn't make assumptions and negative allegations about people based on so little information. I know Fernando and he is a class act. He's great with kids in the community and very approachable to parents with questions about baseball. Fernando says he was recovering from an injury and the pressure to come back made him do something that in my judgement(personal knowledge) is out of character for him. He said he's embarrassed...what more do you need, give the guy a break.

Before Raffy went to congress, he swore there was no way Raffy would ever be involved in any kind of drugs, let alone steroids. Afterwards, my friend was in total shock and disbelief. The point is, that just because he's a stand up guy outside of cheating, doesn't mean he's either a great guy or a monster. None of us are all good or all bad. I always looked at the Diamond when I drove up 95 and my thoughts escape to baseball. I remember a game in '93 when Javy, Chipper and Klesko were in the line-up facing Fernando Valenzuela trying to come back with the O's. Great memories of good times there.

Jim Edmounds was not an expensive free agent. He was traded by the Angels. In return they got rookie 2nd baseman Adam Kennedy and a RHP Bonneville or something like that. Anyway, the Cardinals definitely got an awesome deal out of this. For a pitcher nobody knew and who lasted all of maybe 2-3 years and a 2nd baseman, they got a multi-year Gold Glove winner who also had some power. Then they ended up getting the 2nd baseman back after he had gained some experience and won a ring. At that...

How I picked the winners: First, I compiled the nominations, changing the RLTurner team nomination into one for its coach, as I believe a team almost always reflects its coach, and coaches often don’t get enough credit for performances like the one nominated. Next, I eliminated DMN players of the week (including honorable mentions) because my goal for this award is to recognize performances that may not get as much recognition as they deserve. Next, I selected 10 finalists. Finally, I tried...

You know the reason. If you throw the same pitch every time, hitters will start to sit on it. You have to mix things up to be deceptive. You're ignoring 1974, the year Marshall won his Cy Young. He threw 208 innings in 106 games. I would not be surprised if Marshall's number of innings was influenced by his personality. So this doesn't become a Marshall-only thread, let's bring Fernando Valenzuela into the conversation. He was another screwballer who threw into an advanced age. His pitching...
