Re: Pujols... Best start ever??
Not to take anything away from Pujols, the best postion player in baseball, but I just read an interesting stat. Scott Kazmir just won his 7th game of the season. He is the youngest pitcher to win 7 games this early in a season since Fernando Valenzuela did it back in 1981! Mark down the trade of Kazmir from the Mets to TB for Victor Zambrano and Bartolome Fortunato as one of the best (or worst) trades ever.

Re: Holding runner on 2nd
I got this from Fernando Vina - draw an arc (radius from the bag) where you feel very comfortable getting to the bag on a pickoff play. Now, that arc is the same amount of feet from the bag and yet, where you stand on that arc gives the perspective that the runner is being held. Walk the arc and "explode into your coverage area on the pitch." You should also be able to get to the bag on a pickoff and so, you never have to do the dance.

Re: 30 for 30 on ESPN
cheapseats, GREAT discussion topic. I have watched a number of these and have really liked each of them. The MJ one was done well, as was another baseball-related one on Fernando Valenzuela. I have also seen one on Pacers' Star Reggie Miller. The one that blew my mind was entitled "The Two Escobars". It discusses the funding of the Colombian National S****r team by drug cartel leader Pablo Escobar. In my opinion, this is the best one I have seen!

Re: If height and weight don't matter, then why?
As someone whose son is in between those passed over sub 6 footers and not as tall as O44's free passers I'm stymied. I don't know if he's got an advantage or not. Please don't tell me he has to earn it. Being shorter is a bit of a disadvantage in the recruiting game. Being very tall is both an advantage and a disadvantage. Being fairly tall and athletic looking is an advantage and just like in the corporate world that advantage does tend to be a bit more long lasting than it should be. One...

Re: Marmonte League Rankings
After the game, my son said he told the coach before the game that he had a "bad feeling" after the warmups. The team seemed flat, and I think a bit worn from the emotional game against Dylan Covey on Saturday. Jordan Brower just got a tough break in pitching a three hitter that was matched on the other side more as a reflection of NP's effort than the San Fernando effort (absolutely no disrespect intended). Overall the game was a poster for the importance of not just physical talent, but...

Re: Call for Nominations for Weekly MVP
How I picked the winners: First, I compiled the nominations, changing the RLTurner team nomination into one for its coach, as I believe a team almost always reflects its coach, and coaches often don’t get enough credit for performances like the one nominated. Next, I eliminated DMN players of the week (including honorable mentions) because my goal for this award is to recognize performances that may not get as much recognition as they deserve. Next, I selected 10 finalists. Finally, I tried...

Re: Gary Carter
(and this is from a Phillies fan) My favorite Gary Carter memory is the 1984 all star game. Carter was stil an Expo. First, Fernando Valenzuela pitched lights out. Then, rookie Dwight Gooden relieved him. Gooden was throwing probably 99 and had that insane overhand curve. I don't think Gary Carter could believe what he was seeing. Gooden struck out the side. Carter looked at him and pumped his fist. The next season, Carter was a Met. That inning had to have something to do with it. Ha, found...

Some scouts like the RHP with a big butt and thick thighs, certainly Colon fits that description. A few years ago my son and I saw a AA minor league game where one team brought in a stumpy LHP named Ed Puig. Puig was probably about 30 at the time, was 5'9" or so, weighed well over 200 lbs. PG, Two very good examples of plus speed could be Eugenio Velez, the SF Giants rookie 2B, RF, you name it, and Fernando Perez, a 2004 Rays draftee from Columbia University. Perez has/had 80 speed at Columbia. Played s****r pretty much through high school and only showed some raw talent in college baseball. Is now in AAA, likely to move up before long and is 3.6 seconds to 1B from the left side/3.8 from the right. Getting better every day. I saw him play in the MWL and he is proving himself.

Re: College pitch counts
For the people reading this, do not confuse throwing with pitching. Today's kids throw too little and pitch too much. Throwing builds arm strength. Pitching too much tears arms down. Spahn played in an era, as someone else mentioned, when we threw all day, every day, all summer. Not pitched, threw. We all had arm strength. Those good enough to play MLB ball had incredible arm strength. Spahn once went 16 innings and 163 pitches. I believe Juan Marichal also went the distance that game with a...

Re: Current HOF List for 2012
ONE ten-year period, cherry-picked mostly because it corresponds with what we normally think of as "a decade" - i.e., "the 1980s." Pitcher "wins" is about as crude a measurement of pitching excellence as there is. Pitcher "wins" are really a team measure, and Morris in the 1980s got the benefit of playing with a lot of very good teammates, guys like Trammell and Whitaker and Gibson and Lemon and Parrish and Evans. But even if you DO value pitcher wins, even by that crude measure, this "most...
