Mike never said he was not sure, by any percentage. Mike said he made the best call he could make seeing what he saw. U3 was the only umpire whose job was to go out and make the call. The other umpires had other tasks taking their time and attention, which is why this is not an "appealable" play, nor one in which a second umpire is put in position to watch, nor one subject to replay review. There remains both a human element in baseball and an element of "chance." I once read on an old...

Bulldog I think the world of you but I'm not sure what video you're watching. His left knee is on the ground and his right knee is pretty darn close. His left foot is why the leg broke. He's not on the bottom part of his foot. His foot is turned sideways with the inside ankle part flat on the ground. The leg had nowhere to go when he got ran over so it broke. He stays "on his toes" even in full squat or just flat footed then he's able to roll back and kick his legs free. He's probably...

Re: Buster Posey Runned Over

The enforcement of many interpretations is controlled by the players union and management. The umpires make some calls the way MLB wants them made. As has been said by someone in this thread, this is what MLB wants, or at least thinks it wants. Things change....look at balk enforcement. A while back MLB mandated to the letter balk enforcement. It lasted one season before they told the umpires to back off. Same thing happened with Sandy Alderson and the strike zone. Bottom line, MLB...

Friday night starter is harder, their first time seeing the hitters while the saturday night and sunday guys get to watch. The first game of a series is always harder for the first starters (all positions). Friday usually goes to the ace. If Bauer is considered the better pitcher, why was he NOT in that friday night start? At anytime, if the coach felt that Cole couldn't handle it, he could have switched them up. Does a few less runs to work with make pitchers more comfortable, yes and those...

They're a good team, but I think I've seen a handful of others in the post-season that are better. I really like the Beaver's coach. I think Coach Casey is doing a great job with his program. I tend to agree Bulldog. Pujols wouldn't risk getting hurt IMO. Interesting that twice in the last week Mike Napoli for the Rangers was out by 20 feet at the plate. Both times he slid. Both times catchers clearly thought they were about to be trucked moved back exposing the plate. He slid both times and was safe both times. Ump got one right to win the game vs. Royals. Napoli strikes me as a pretty hard nosed guy and he obviously made the decision that he is not going to run a fellow catcher...

Certainly you remember the post here on the HSBBW in the general forum titled "umpire hits HS coach" since you posted in it as well....where I and 2 other umpires from our forum stated basically the same thing about the umpire in question..... Dont think you would find any umpires here who would defend a coach/umpire physically assaulting one another......it just has no place in baseball period...

Re: How long

Bulldog.....the moral of the story is nobody associated with kids playing baseball should let a situaton escalate to the point of an altercation. That goes for players, parents, coaches, and umpires. Paplebon barely bumped the umpire and will miss 3-games and lose approxamately $225,000. MLB has a way of hittng you where it hurts for an altercation. High school baseball has no resemblance to MLB, so maybe perspective is what is needed more than debate.

Re: How long

If he umpires the next day, it's because the penalty has not yet been levied. The same happens with players. They can play for weeks while a penalty is being appealed. If you are insinuating that umpires are not punished for such behavior, that is patently untrue. Umpires are fined, severely for their salary, for such action and lose games. For behavior less severe than that they have been known to lose post season assignments. In 2007 Mike Winters referred to Milton Bradley as a piece of...

I dont know exactly about the discipline of Joe West in the instance you are refering to, but if you are just trying to use JW as an example, He clearly was included and called out publicly in the discipline event last year. Ozzie Guillen, pitcher Mark Buehrle, and umpire Joe West were all fined an undisclosed amount for their actions during a May 2010 game against Cleveland, leading to the ejections of Guillen and later Buehrle after they disputed two balk calls.

Re: How long

The point is that MLB does discipline umpires as Jimmy has pointed out previously.....its just that MLB does not publicly announce the penalty on umpires for their own reasons....(you and I might not agree about that, but it is what it is) Umpires can and do get suspended for actions like this....MLB Umpire Mike Winters was suspended by Major League Baseball for the remainder of the regular season a few years ago because of a confrontation with San Diego's Milton Bradley....(and that was...

I see. So since you personally are not privy to the facts, you feel free to make them up. Most folks I know chose not to assume that which they do not know. You style is completely alien to me. Those in charge of discipline of umpires are governed by the team owners, not umpires. They are ones who decide which punishments are made public and which are not, not the umpires. MLB decided long ago that it is not, for the most part, to publicize these matters. Word, however, does filter out,...

Plate umpire was not down the line changing the call. He provided information that the U1 did not have. U1 changed his call which is why the skipper came to him after the changed call. When reviewing these replays, it's best to leave the sound off. The announcers were repeating myth's and nonsense over and over.

Re: Getting it right?

Once again, the plate umpire provided U1 with information he did not have. In response to the team managers and MLB administration's demand for umpires to get together on calls where one umpire, while performing his duties may have seen things differently than the calling umpire, they did. Plays happen that at first seem to call for the mandate positioning and then develop in a manner that that position is no longer the most advantageous. When there is time, umpires then adjust. When there...

Bulldog has done a nice job of summarizing above - the one thing I would add is that the Doctor performing the surgery is almost always most comfortable with one approach or another and thus will prefer that option. My son's doctor, said that, in his experience, he preferred the cadaver over the other two options because: 1) the hamstring option resulted in a weaker hamstring and a higher probability of loss of explosiveness and tendency towards pulling hammys in the future. He did like the...

An ambiguous phrase in an ambiguous poll, looks like a fit to me Dog, that is probably more the case than the "coach look". One thing about a parents rose colored glasses is that they become clear very soon after the boy fails to produce. However, some coaches will turn and point their failures being the result of poor talent, uncoachable kids, or parent issues before looking in the mirror at their own inadequacies .

Bulldog19, To be honest, I am a bit surprised by your comments in this thread. I say that because I think you posted that you worked in Milb for a team one Summer and I assumed would have seen the broad spectrum. If so, I am not sure why you have the focus so much on the narrow spectrum. Just some illustrations:there are 50 rounds in the draft, about 40 players get signed. Of those 40, most are like our son. They sign for $1,000 and work morning, noon and night to earn one chance and then do...

This shot was taken from our booster club's " Bulldog One " which, when we're not flying a banner behind, we use for security and crowd control. Re: Why don't we hear?

Jimmy03 ·
1. All ejections are evaluated. 2. Umpires do get fined. 3. MLB traditionally does not make umpire discipline public to avoid the appearance that any particular team, manager or player had the ability to influence umpiring. however, from time to time the publicity is unavoidable. Umpires have been suspended during the regular season, fined, lost post season opportunities and "asked" to retire/resign for behavioral and performance issues.

And he absolutely deserved to be instantly gone. In the second one, I agree the ump acted unprofessionally. However, we don't know what was said to him by: a) the catcher (who started the whole thing by visibly and obviously protesting the call of a pitch), or b) the dugout.

Re: Why don't we hear?

Jimmy03 ·
Umpires are trained not to "get in the catcher's face" with one exception...when all else has failed to get his attention and the alternative is an ejection. Getting in his grill and laying out the facts of life is normally the catcher's last chance to stay in the game. The timing for that is in the umpires judgment.
