Re: West Chester camps

meachrm ·
Never met the coaches but West Chester has traditionally attracted tough, blue collar kids. Their recent success in baseball over the years probably attracts more talented players as well. The school has always been considered a good education major school, especially Phys. Ed. There are other schools that are more expensive with more rigorous academics but West Chester has always been a good option for blue collar kids. I think their team make-up reflects that as well. Hope this helps. Good...

Re: Playing for HS and Showcase at same time?

I doubt if there are any rules to prevent this, but HS coach would likely not like this at all. There are unwritten rules that Select team ball starts after HS, as there is always a concern for injury and overuse, (especially with pitchers). If your son gets hurt playing on the weekend the HS coach will get very angry and make it harder for him and others to play on team in the Summer. That is why there is an unwritten truce.

In many states, it is not allowed. I know in Illinois that applies at any level. Have seen freshmen teams have to forfeit games because of it..

Your best bet is to contact UIL directly. Darryl Beasley, asst. ath. dir., 512-471-5883, dbeasley@uiltexas.org . You may want to consider the coaches position, if the JV player would be considered for a move to Varsity come playoff time. I'm in Dallas, & unless it is a reversal or a very recent change, I don't believe UIL would allow it. I know Varsity players could not. Son did attend a couple tournaments/showcases in the fall, missing a day of school each time due to travel, no...

UIL does not govern activities outside of school; May students participate in non-school activities? Answer: Students may participate in non-school activities at anytime. This means that a student may play, practice or praticipate in a try-out for non-school teams The statement above was copied directly from the baseball manual in the Q&A section. The manual can be viewed on http://www.uiltexas.org/baseball .

Yep, familiar with the above. OP didn't specify whether these were weekend tourneys, or otherwise conflicted with HS season schedule. That is the unknown factor. Times have changed.

Had this come up for the first time last year and there were no real problems. Kid was a catcher. He did not miss his HS games. Only time it affected him was he had a weekend tourn and did not get in until 2-3 a.m. Monday morning and we had a district game Monday afternoon. He was dragging after 4 tourn games and getting in lat and then playing that Monday

I would think that any HS kid that skipped a school practice or game, would very quickly find himself playing for the showcase team only, so there would be no further conflicts. Time spent at HS practice or games would not be "outside of school". School activities come first. I haven't seen much of this problem beyond freshman ball. Once you get to the older, the tounaments don't typically start till June, do they? My son's team will start practices in early May, but always on Saturday or...

Thank you for all of the great answers.... Just to clarify.... There is no conflict between the high school team and the tournament team. High school games and practices are during the week. Tournament games are on the weekend. We had always heard that it was the coaches that didn't want their players playing and getting hurt outside of school, and then we heard that it was a UIL rule, but the UIL rules for texas do not actually state whether they can or cannot play during a district season.

JeffLovin, My opinion only, but kids need an adequate amount of down time/ recovery time & study time. There is truth to the saying "there's only so many bullets in the holster"...During HS season, 2 games a week + 1-1/2 to 2 hrs a day practice, during a week seems like plenty of playing time for kids under 18 & not in College. After HS season is done, there's 3-4 days a week until mid Nov. That's still a lot of innings, AB's or whatever. When he gets to college baseball will consume...

My son is a position player in his Jr year. He has gotten some attention by Hi Academic D1- D3 but have been told that they want to see a complete three years worth of semester grades inorder to move to the next level. They are very reserved in making any more movements beside that. At least to MY son. It is about transcripts of three full years I was told by a couple RCs. My son, who is a freshman at a D3, was first seen by his coach at HF in FL Fall of his junior year. He talked to his coach at a Top96 event that same Fall. Then in January they had a significant conversation about his grades, test scores and what kind of school he was looking for. The coach told him he needed to take a math and science SAT II and apply EA. Over the next few months, they kept in touch via email, and my son even got a hand-written note from the coach asking him to apply EA. We...

Gov, you know my 2017 son's story; it closely parallels 2boydads, including SAT scores, size, and speed and what we heard from Ivy coaches, in particular, about what they want from their outfielders. Every high academic coach son dealt with (all private schools) became more interested after they heard his mid Junior year GPA and SAT scores. At that point we knew it was going to be about the baseball: if he was a good enough player, and they needed someone in his position, his academics were...

Smoke, having done the HF Jupiter during junior year, as you did with your older one, my sense was if you had a big 88-90 arm as a junior you got some real attention. Vandy, Duke, William & Mary, Texas, and HPY were on the hunt to acquire top 2018 pitchers. I thought the combination of AZ Fall Junior Classic, then 3 weeks later to be at HF Jupiter would be a chance for my 2018 to be seen twice in front of the same group of coaches on his list. Maturity is a funny word....as a freshman my son is going to try his hardest out on the field. He will dive into the wall to get a foul ball, no second thoughts about it. However, after he makes that catch he is also likely to go into the dugout and make a fart joke. He IS 14 after all :- )

Wow! This is just getting good, no need to change the channel. In my opinion, I think RJM was just trying to tell H4D that we all know our kids need to be internally motivated, etc, and his motivational speech was playing to an audience of pretty experience baseball people. I don't think he was trying to brag on his credentials, just trying to share that many of the posters on this board like RJM, who has more post than I can even calculate, have walked many miles in his shoes already.

I was the starting pitcher in the second game of a dbl header (two 7-inning games) for the very poor college baseball team I was on against the always powerful Lewis-Clark State. Was down 4-0 in the first inning before I'd even warmed up. L-C State had scored 10 (!) runs in the top of the 7th in the first game, so they were probably exhausted. Anyway, we scratched our way back into the game and tied it in the bottom of the 6th. I go out in the top of the seventh and the first guy up hits...

While it's gone a bit sideways, I do like the idea of this thread. We don't spend enough time on this HS baseball website talking about HS baseball, and the OP is correct - the future is now. The first day of tryouts for real spring baseball is coming up here in CA very soon, and for a lot of Freshman (and their parents) it truly is a day that they have been anticipating and preparing for over past several years. I know that when my 2017 was getting ready he was really chomping at the bit.

The parents who hung around practices during my son's freshman year stuck out like sore thumbs, and not for good reasons. Parents do need to stay away from practice as best they can. Your kids need some time away from your critical eye. When my kids were younger high school players I picked them up after practice. If practice was still going on I walked near the field. Being a travel coach the high school coaches would engage me in conversation. It was general baseball/softball conversation.
