@TheOldBallGame I would rephrase your question to say "show me where in the rule book is says it is illegal?" I don't mean to be confrontational, but rules can't cover every what if, even rule books as big as the NCAA's. I would say, show the rule that says it is illegal. To reinforce the fact it is not illegal, look at the volleyball coaches at Stanford (I am using volleyball because this is where it has been happening the longest). Both the paid Assistant Coach Jason Mansfield and...

Here's a copy of the Division II rule regarding employment of HS coaches. While it doesn't specifically address travel ball coaches, it's certainly OK for them if it's OK for a HS coach. NCAA Division II Bylaw 11.4.3 High School, College-Preparatory School or Two-Year College Coach. An institution may employ a high school, college-preparatory school or two-year college coach, provided the individual: (a) Performs actual, on-the-field coaching duties; (b) Is involved in recruiting only to the...

First have a plan and communicate that plan to the players. Then stick with it. If for some reason you change your plan, communicate that to your players. With proper communication, most players will buy in. And make sure they know which games they will play in case Grandma wants to come. I have seen a few things work. Splitting time 50/50 can work. Would even allow the non-playing player to skip a game if needed. If a kid is going to pitch, treat him like a pitcher only for that day. Also,...

Your son's conference is 24 max for conference road games and they will likely take up to 27 for non-conference. Keep in mind that it's not like they decide at the start of the year who those 24 or 27 are going to be .....the decision's usually not made until a day or two before each roadtrip starts. Injuries, pitching rotations, etc can determine who goes and who stays home. Spring Break trip will likely take everyone.

Also depends on the team, HC, and where player stands on depth chart. As parent of a frosh playing D1 baseball...wanting to see your son play...I would be hesitant to plan on attending away games until you are more certain that he will be on travel roster. My son is a 2018 so we still have plenty of time before we start scheduling any trips but I can almost certainly say that our trips during his frosh year will be planned for home games just to be safe.

I don't know the exact number but yes there are fewer players on away games. Might be a function of what the school program can afford on away games. Might take a few games but son will know where he stands. Parents of pitchers have it rough unless a starter. Son's first series freshman year was away, we made arrangements to go for the weekend. Son's response "i dunno" when asked if he thinks he will get any playing time (positional player). 3 hrs before game time we get a text he is...

True dat...Quick story. I ran track in college. I was told I was going to be redshirted my frosh year about two weeks prior to our first meet. I was having some issues adjusting to competing at that level. Happens to most college Frosh. Not sure if it was the pressure being removed or what, but right after that everything clicked and I adjusted. I started performing at a level that surpassed my prior bests. Not a coach said anything to me. I just kept bringing it to practice. We have our day...

As indicated above, it varies a great deal. When son played, I believe the rule in the ACC was 27 for conference games. However, the actual number was sometimes more than that. Only 27 guys would be active, but injured players and others sometimes traveled as inactive players. There were times when I saw them in the dugout dressed out, even though officially inactive. For non-conference games son's team usually took the full roster. But, other teams that came in for midweek games, especially...

I think that only matters for "Championship" events, because NCAA is footing the bill. Max is 27 players for D1, and 25 players for D2 and D3.

Across the different divisions the concept is the same...conference determines travel roster size. And the travel rosters can be “set” very late in the week. Most teams will not travel their entire team to non conference games either. And some won’t travel the whole team on Spring Break which can be a real downer for those kids/families...having just witnessed that again last year.

Son's D2 JuCo took 25 (35 on the roster) on away games (what the bus would hold) and his D2 University usually took about the same, but I am not completely sure.

I believe son's D1 team took the entire team to the "Championship events", which included travel for the conference championship as well as NCAA Regionals. I think 24-27 traveled to conference games. As far as spring break trips, the team did leave a few behind, which was sad for player and parents, and I'm sure the coaches, too, since they were probably under budget constraints.

For some reason, the portion of the NCAA site containing the rule book isn't working this morning. However, this article suggests that D1 baseball tournament rosters are capped at 27. The entire "travel party" is capped at 35. I assume this includes coaches, trainers, and non-roster players. Of course, 35 is just the number for which the NCAA will reimburse expenses. The school could always carry more than that, at its own expense. http://www.ncaa.org/sites/defa...olicies_20171009.pdf NOTE:...

Welcome to the site. You'll find a lot of help here from people who have already been through this, some several times. We're in the middle of the process for the first time with our 2017 son. In his case, I don't know that travel ball is a must, but the kid has to play in settings where coaches will be there to see him. For us that means targeting a few showcases and, if interest is demonstrated, some specific college camps. I suspect if my son had a chance, or the will, to join a good...

As my son is entering his junior year I am of the opinion that showcases and travel ball that targets showcases are a good avenue to get noticed by college scouts. My son attended a Complete Showcase in Houston a few months ago and there were 39 college coaches from D1 to NAIA. Another avenue is to make small clips of a player batting, pitching, catching, hitting and email college coaches directly. This is the cheapest way to go obviously. I know a local kid that was recruited to a large D1...

Depends. He has to be seen at some point by someone (college coach) who gives yes to him playing at the next level. So if the HS he goes to is a powerhouse that has lots of boys go to college then he might be seen at HS games, but generally college coaches don't go to random HS games. They are in season and are only going to the ones where they have a specific interest. If he has incredibly dominate tools of some sort (speed running, velocity as a pitcher, hitting with power) then maybe. But...

Boy, is this a loaded question! but a good one as Justbaseball said. Whether it's a necessity or not depends on a lot of things- does your son know where he wants to go? how long is his list? Does he want to stay local or does he want to expand his geography? How connected is his HS coach and does he promote his players? I can tell you in our case, travel ball helped tremendously. We rarely see a college coach at our regular season games, we are a 'northern' area, and our HS season is only...

Here's the thing on travel ball. If you want to play in college you need to find a few travel teams and do some homework. Find out where they get their other players, are they a local travel team or a national team. Talk to other parents and coaches in your area the teams are not hard to find. Then go talk to the travel team coaches and request a try-out. See where you stack up? Are you better of playing for travel team A or travel team B or travel team C ? Also the problem with the OP idea , of breaking out is so subjective it's no help to the player. IF money is an issue most travel teams have a little set aside to help players in need... especially if you throw 90 or hit 400 foot shots I have never seen a travel team or travel org turn down a player because he could not afford it.

BACKDOORSLIDER hits on something important. The travel team you play on is just as important as playing travel ball. If you are playing in a lower level program that does not do much to develop players and does not work to get them seen by the right folks, you might be better off not playing travel ball. Conversely if you are in the right program that knows how to get kids noticed and plays in the right places, it can open up avenues for your son that would not normally be there. Do you...

Boom! There it is. bacdorslider - the issue I would have with your first response is that it is just not true for a group of high schools where our kids grew up. I certainly would not say its a waste of time for kids at those schools - but it is not a 'necessity' for many of them. I have seen as many as 30 scouts at HS games in a certain HS league that has produced hundreds of college players...and some big leaguers too. Justbaseball, I agree its not a necessity in the definition... but like anything else you should use all the resources available to you. Ones decision not to play travel ball should not be based on the fact that it's not a necessity . I think everyone understands that you do not have to play travel ball to play in college but travel ball ( exposure you would not get other wise) will help your chances and give you more opportunities.

No it is not a necessity. Exposure to college recruiters and the baseball establishment is a necessity. Today, travel baseball is the most traveled path for that exposure. The big question is how much exposure is needed for a particular recruit for a particular college and understanding the barriers. JMO

Nothing is absolutely necessary! Players have reached the very highest level taking many different paths. The thing that is vitally important is having the required talent and visibility. One without the other doesn't work. It doesn't really matter whether the player wants to stay local for college or travel across the country. The more interest a player creates the better opportunities he will have. So if the local college is offering 25%, what would they offer if you were being recruited...

No. Is it the advised path? It depends on what a player is looking for in his future for baseball. I don't believe a D3 prospect has to play travel. He needs to attend the appropriate showcases or camps for exposure. A D1 and D2 prospect is going to get better exposure through playing travel. If a player aspires...
