Re: Caltech
JCG, we've seen Coach Whitehead at showcases, but haven't heard of Caltech recruiting at even the level that MIT "recruits". It's all somewhat moot for my son at this point, as he is a 2022 HS grad.

Re: Caltech
A kid who didn’t get more than garbage time senior year at my son’s high school was one of the best players at Caltech while he was there. I was happy for the kid. He was a great kid. His father was a great guy. He never griped about his son not getting much of a chance in high school. He just cheered for who was on the field. The kid was a Legion two way starter. Legion in our area was mostly varsity bench and JV players.

Ferdy, Based on my experience on this website, I believe you'll find that Caltech is one of those few places that does very little if any recruiting. Their admissions rate for men is 5% for men and 7% overall. Those folks that go to Caltech aren't going primarily to play baseball. If you were a standout high school baseball player and are one of the select few to be admitted to CalTech (approx 285 men) I really like your chances of making the CalTech baseball team! Best of luck on the SAT or...

Re: Caltech
I think there is one current Caltech parent on here and one parent of a 2020 grad. They may see this and chime in. There are multiple current and former SCIAC parents here too, if that's any help. The online rosters are accurate, I believe, so that should be helpful. And if you look at some of the player bios you'll see that playing baseball doesn't seem to affect their academic or even extracurricular achievements much. Caltech goes to HF Honor roll, and maybe some others, so yeah, they do ...

Caltech
Hiya, Does anyone have recent experience with the Caltech baseball program? I’m familiar with their conference and their standing therein. I’m interested in the culture, how many players on the roster, how the players can play while handling their academics, and whether the HC does any recruiting. Thank you!

Re: Caltech
Kevin Whitehead is a good man. I spent some time talking with him at HF and he seemed like a good human. He is the reason they have won a few games over the past few years. They will take just about anyone on the roster. Kevin is from Tacoma (I think). Caught at Texas Tech where he met his wife who is an Odessa girl. They moved to California for her to go to more college.

Caltech 2022 Question
I had been talking to the Caltech head coach Kevin Whitehead since I met him at a camp in the summer, eventually leading to a campus tour and a letter of support. After the deadline, I messaged him a couple times asking if all the forms and letter of support were attached correctly to my profile, but I haven't heard back. Am I overthinking things, or is it possible he knows I was rejected and doesn't want to continue to initiate conversation? I saw another post on here about how their son...

There is, my message was to confirm if the letter had been attached and if I needed to do anything else.

Re: Caltech 2022 Question
My son never saw what the coach had done or included to indicate his support with admissions, so I doubt you will see that kind of information in your portal of info. If you applied early decision or early action, I assume you'll be hearing soon whether you got in under those circumstances. If coach isn't available to confirm his support, I don't know what else to tell you. Good luck!

Re: Caltech 2022 Question
He was deferred at Case Western (along with seemingly every other EA applicant), and has applied at Rochester, but would be walking-on either school. He's applying RD to MIT, but that is a reach school, even with a 790 SAT-Math, perfect grades and a dozen APs. Harvey Mudd is on his list, but I'm not sure his FB velo is high enough (T83, 80-82). He met the coach at WPI at a showcase this summer, and also considering Univ of Chicago and possibly Carleton.

Re: Caltech 2022 Question
Yeah I wonder how many recruits got in EA at Caltech because I figured I would have seen at least one person by now. I wish the best of luck to you and him and hopefully he ends up somewhere he loves.

Re: Caltech 2022 Question
My son also had a couple of very good phone calls with Coach Whitehead, along with a few email exchanges. I know the coach submitted a letter of support to admissions office by end of Oct. We were guardedly optimistic, but unfortunately my son did not get accepted. I'm not sure how many kids the coach wrote letters for, but I thought he mentioned he was looking for 7 players. I haven't seen anyone 2022s say they've committed there yet - I was expecting to see a couple by now, since early...

Mg19 - sorry to hear you didn't get in either. I figured he had at best a 50/50 chance, but it is a crazy hard school to get into. Are you pursuing any other D3 HA schools? My son was in contact with 8-10 coaches in late summer, but probably only a couple that he's seriously considering and applying to.

Re: Caltech 2022 Question
I applied to MIT EA without a letter of support and was deffered. I didn't have a 780+ math on the SAT so I wasn't able to get a letter of support there so if I happen to get in this spring I would walk on there. I'm also looking at Harvey Mudd as well and I plan on applying there RD and am in contacts with the coach there. How about your son?

Re: Caltech 2022 Question
Yeah I didn't get in either and was surprised to not see anything about people committed. When I talked and did a campus tour he said his athlete acceptance rate is around 50% so he most likely wrote for about 14 people.
