Re: NCAA Transfer Portal "quirk"

TPM ·
I think that Rick did a super job of explaining about the "quirk". Thank you Rick! I am sure that, coaches from the Midwest that are familiar with the Missouri Valley Conference know that DBU is in a D2 that plays in a D1 conference. I wouldn't necessarily think that those from other regions might be familiar and I will assume a few folks here wouldn't know that either.

My thought with DBU is that D1 coaches are only looking at other D1 players in the portal..so if DBU players are listed as D2 they could very well not even be seen by other D1 coaches...it would not seem odd to any D1 coach that there are no DBU players in the portal...I am guessing the portal can be filtered by division for the coaches looking...

Granted, I am a nobody and there may be people here that aren't familiar with DBU like myself, but check this out. Number 5 in wins over the last 7 years? I think it's fair to question how knowledgeable some of these D1 coaches are. So maybe a coach filtered D2 out of their spreadsheet. But I'd think any D1 coach worth his salt would find it conspicuously odd that DBU players are never on their spreadsheet. We all know how small the college baseball coaching world is, right? Everyone talks...

NCAA Transfer Portal "quirk"

Rick at Informed Athlete ·
I was just made aware of a "quirk" regarding the Transfer Portal and thought I would share for whatever it's worth. An athlete transferring from a multi-divisional athletic program will be shown in the Transfer Portal as a transfer from the level for which the overall athletic program is known. Example: With Dallas Baptist being a D2 program in all sports other than baseball, a baseball player from DBU who enters the Transfer Portal will be listed as transferring from a D2 baseball program!

Re: NCAA Transfer Portal "quirk"

DanJ ·
Well, this is interesting. Dallas Baptist is a D1 baseball program who just won 34 games this season. Beat a bunch of ranked teams along the way. From 2014 to 2019, they won AT LEAST 40 games each season. Admittedly, I don't know much of anything about them (just looked all this up), but clearly they're no bottom feeder D1 program. Far from it, in fact. So the question is why? Why are portal kids from there only getting inquiries from D2 and D3 programs? Is it because times are really tough...

New and improved “Transfer Portal 2023” thread…

There was another thread in the fall that that turned into a dumpster fire. How about a new thread with some general info? 1. When does the portal open and close for summer of 2023? 2. I know D1baseball posts portal info. Anyone know when they might post current players? (I subscribe but only see 2022 info on the site as of the other day) 3. Lets hear pros/cons for players entering after freshman/sophomore/junioryears? Anyone have any other questions or info please post to help others.

Does that 48% number include grad transfers? We have a few in the portal who threw their names in the ring in the event they had breakout senior years knowing they had very little interest in continuing. I also think the 48% is optimistic. The 48% is for NCAA schools. Does that number climb to 80% is you include NJCAA?

What does "student-athletes reported to have enrolled..." mean? Reported how? Are they going by the NCAA eligibility center? If that's the case that's just covering players that transferred to another D1 or D2 school, not D3s or or JUCOs.

Choosing to walk on (at a perceived “better” school) instead of taking a scholarship offer (at a perceived “lesser” school) is the decision that I think is almost always a bad one. When walking on is your only chance to continue playing there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. I did it and it worked out for me. But it’s a tough road that is uphill all the way. Even for pitchers, although their odds are much better.

My son missed the season with an injury and I am in the same boat. Hoping for the best, planning for the worst. He has a very strong JUCO track record to fall back on, but he will also have to answer questions about his injury, should we get to that point. I know the board is negative towards walking on, but if he does get shown the door or has money cut, I wonder if that might be the best option. I can't imagine a lot of coaches are going to be lining up to give money to a player who missed...

I think MidAtlaticDad's stat is huge. Most players/parents think if I get in the portal I will get all these offers but that is not the case. If you did not play where you were, you don't have any numbers for coaches to look at. You normally also do not have any references because most coaches are not going to give a good reference to a guy who is leaving their program. You have to go back to your HS days for any significant information to provide. If you are leaving to move up or down and...

That's the thing, d1baseball.com rarely updates where a player ends up. That is completely self reported unless it's a well known player. One can take that a lot of ways but there is generally some grain of truth to any comment like that made regardless of the situation. Son has thought a lot about things since then. NCAA-D1 and D2 have been transfer ins have been reconciled. NAIA should be complete by 5/19 NCAA-D3 a few weeks after. Followed by NCCAA/USCAA JUCO to JUCO transfers tbd Information at the school level, thus can be rolled up to a conference or divisional level. No time table

D1 added a few hundred players yesterday. While the portal opens on the 30th, a player can enter any time if they are cut, have aid reduced or cut, have a coaching change or were a walk on. I assume exit meetings have already taken place at those schools with players in the portal.

Folks, You gotta do your homework! Bucknell (9 of 10 are grad-transfer), Davidson (8 of 8 are grad transfer). The same for Holy Cross and St. Bonaventure. That's all I really checked. Some players (Markontonatos @St. Peters are clearly looking to upgrade--his coach is certainly not cutting him loose!) You really have to examine each and every team and each player you see in the portal. Don't generalize! Definitely do some digging!

Exactly. I'm sure the patriot league schools on that list aren't cutting kids to bring in JUCO kids and transfers. They are no where near fully funded (I've heard 1 scholarship?). Can't imagine a family/kid thinking it's a good idea to go pay 70k to maybe get playing time and lose to Army every year. Side note, Lafayette would routinely come to my kids' HS to give presentations for the juniors. It was horrific. Was basically "Can't afford us? Go into a ton of a debt to come to our school...

That’s an incomplete list but wow! I chose 5 as an arbitrary number and made a list of the schools that have more players than that in the portal (according to the post by @baseballhs ). To me, a big number of players in the portal is a huge red flag. Anyone considering any of these programs better do some digging: Bucknell 10, Central CT 7, Charlotte 6, Coastal Carolina 7, UConn 8, Davidson 8, Delaware 6, Gardner Webb 7, Holy Cross 8, Lafayette 7, Lindenwood 10, Longwood 7, Middle Tenn 6,...

What I said was not an indictment of any of those schools. It was an observation along with a suggestion to do some digging to find out what’s going on at these schools if you have interest. My contention, which I stand by, is that a lot of players in the portal from the same school is something you need an explanation about.

I understand and agree with you. But, a lot of parents on here may not do their homework and see your list of schools that have no graduate programs and assume they are bad. Son's team still playing, but coach met with seniors already so they could have some clarity. There is 1 player in there from son's school. He's a grad transfer. He played 4 years, and I think based on academics and his ability he wanted to see if he could play a 5th year at a higher level. My guess is the HC tried to keep him and depending on his prospects may be back. There are also many kids on that list that are already at their new school and have. played a season.

Technically, I think he can talk to juco coaches without being in the portal. However, doing that while the D1 coach is under the impression that he is returning would be very bad form. The baseball community has no secrets. If he contacts a juco coach, there's a very good chance that information gets back to the D1 coach. IMO, he should finalize his decision to leave the school before talking to anyone. I don't know of any risks associated with entering the portal if you know that you won't...

P5 scholarships have been guaranteed and players still get cut all the time. As soon as a coach says "You aren't going to play here", most players are going to head out. I believe the rule is the scholarship is guaranteed until they graduate. I would think it might benefit older kids who are closer to their degree if it does have any impact.
