I am just a coach and we won the game but i still am not sure if the ump made the right call (even though it was for us)..

1 out count 2-2 runner on 3rd.. Pitcher throws the ball in the dirt and the 3rd base runner takes off for home. the batter never leaves the box and the runner has to run/step around the batter to touch the plate. Catcher did try to make a play but at the time there were 3 players at home plate.. A runner the batter and the pitcher...

The ump said the runner ran into the batter while batter was in the box and called the runner out.  Next pitch was a strike which made it 3 outs and that was ballgame.. I thought at the very least the batter would be out for being in the box during a play at the plate. But then that could just be sax out at the home plate in order for the runner to steal home.. It was a 2-3 ballgame and we were home team so if the runner would have scored and the batter was out it would have been 3-3 with 2 outs and a new batter.

The other coach lost his mind with this call and started yelling at the ump and cussing in front of all these kids..  Me and him are friends and i just want to know for sure if the right call was made.  If the ump was wrong then that sucks and i will make sure everyone know it. Im all about fair play period..  This might throw a kink in the whole story but i would think not.. This is girls 12 under fastpitch softball..

Thanks,

Jesse B

Don't know softball rules but in baseball if the batter has time to move out of the way on this play then he needs to.  If there are less than two outs then the runner is out.  If there are two outs then the batter is out.

So, it sounds like the umpire probably got it right based on the way Im picturing your description of the play.

And win or lose theres no reason for a coach to lose his mind over a 12-U game.

First, the runner hitting the batter makes no difference to anything, if anything it hurt him not helped him. You said the ball was in the dirt, did the catcher keep it in reach or was a passed ball. If the ball got away and F2 had to chase it then certainly the batter has to clear to allow the defense to make a play. Now if the umpire had said that the batter prevented the defense from making a play then it's interference and then follow what noumpire says about less than two, or two outs.

Yes passed ball.. The batter never cleared the box.. I was stating that the runner ran into the batter to show how much she was in the box.. (like never moved).. I think the other team found out for themselves the ruling was correct.  Just had a mad coach that does not like to lose. Which i understand.. But he acted like an a$$  in front of all these kids.. Small town stuff..

Thanks for your replies.
