16U Summer Ball Discussion

Last week my son's high school team got knocked out of the playoffs, so finally Summer ball is here. I can't wait to see the progress of the boys on my son's team, (Dallas Tigers--Vanlandingham), as well as see the many friends he and I have in the Tigers organization, (and on other teams around the metroplex).

My son's team should be pretty good, as well as the other two Tigers teams (Hernandez and Upchurch). The FW Cats, D-BAT (Guthrie) and Arlington Heat also are probably going to have very good teams, but I don't have much knowledge on the others.

How do you guys think your teams will fair this year? What tournaments are you looking forward to attending? Who is going to East Cobb in June?

Of the (4) 16u Arlington A's teams, my son plays for A's - Nolen. They are the only 16u A's team Dave Acton is sending to play at East Cobb. Doing the 17u Wood Bat event July 5-12. Lot's of travel ahead in addition to this. Brenham, Lubbock and Waco. My pocket book is taking a beating. I hope it's all worth it.
Maybe we'll see you guys at some local events this summer. I'll be the slim 6 ft. 1 inch freckled guy with a brownish gotee wearing Oakley shades.

I've heard great thing about Acton, and I liked him when we met. Is Carson Houston on that team?

Monkeyboy is correct. Carson, Brandon and Brady have all been teammates of my son since we left the Irving Heat after 2009. We started with the A's 14u in 2010. Cornish is 1 of 3 Paschal kids on this squad.

I really like Acton. I believe he has my son's best interest in mind and will set him on a path to success beyond HS. He knows how to develop his players and has been doing this a long time now.

Rock Dad - Acton required the A's to start swinging
BBCOR last summer. All the A's tournaments this summer are BBCOR/wood. Not sure about BBI. I know that when the A's-Nolen team goes to East Cobb, the event is wood only WWBA 17u National Championships.
I guess that's to give scouts a better perspective on the MLB potential of the younger players? Get the players more used to performing with wood.

Rock Dad - I don't understand that either. I can understand the use of wood at PG Showcases and things of the like in an attempt to level the playing field as much as possible for grading purposes. However, 99.99% of the 16 yo's playing in the BBI league are not going straight to the pros and therefore the use of wood is puzzling. The majority of these kids, if lucky enough to play at the next level, are going to be using BBCOR. So why not use BBCOR?

There's lots of wood bat brands avail so doubtful. I think my son's wood bats are your basic louisville slugger, mizuno, rawlings, and so on. Same folks that make non-wood bats. Which are much more expensive than wood. We didn't break a bat last year.

Anyway, doesn't matter I was just curious since BBCOR bats are engineered to be close to wood in performance. In Premier tournament last year players could use wood or BBCOR so they considered them essentially the same.

Aleebaba's right. It's about facing the best the country can offer. That's what Dave Acton with the A's is striving for. To develop his 16u boys, he wants them facing quality 17u ball players.
Certainly quality can be found locally within Texas and for the most part, that's what we'll face.
I will admit, at first I wasn't so on board with the idea. It's a big commitment. Time off work and expense. Combined with all the other Texas travels we'll face, it's not easy. The thought that maybe we should be waiting till our boys are 17u occured to me. But now that we are all in on this idea and airlines tickets are purchased, the boys are excited and the parents are too. It will probably be a playing up experience beyond a local Texas playing up experience. I would expect some seriously stout pitching against our hitters and our pitchers will be challenged beyond what they normally would. When they return to Texas, mentally they should feel a bit stronger and thus become more developed players. When I coached I always wanted to play up as much as possible and often disagreed with our manager about not playing up enough. When I finally convinced him to do it, it paid off greatly.

Regarding bats in BBI Premier league play:

We were told, "This means that all teams will use solid wood bats only. LAMINATE,COMPOSITE AND BAMBOO ARE ILLIGAL."

Wondering about the bamboo. Is that what the rest of you were instructed?

I looked at the AABC Handbook - new rule 221. It says, "only wood, laminate or composite wood of similar material bats (the only exception to the similar material is the Baum Bat) may be used."

Doesn't mention bamboo. Does bamboo qualify as "non-wood?"

Don't find any mention of rules on bbi website.
