Does anyone have any experience with filing and receiving medical exemption approval from the NCAA? My son's freshman season was cut short last year and had to have surgery. The games played was less than the NCAA threshold and his injury/last game appeared was before the established cut off in the season. Supposedly the athletic trainer filed for a medical exemption for him so that he could be redshirt freshman this year. From that point last year, everything still shows him as a sophomore. He has asked the trainer multiple times if everything was good. The first time he confirmed the paperwork was submitted and just waiting for the NCAA to respond. This was back May 2024. He has asked several times since then and he keeps getting told to not worry about and that he will be a redshirt freshman. Two weeks until the season starts and all the school media still shows sophomore. He asked again today and was told that the medical exemptions randomly get granted through the year and he would follow up. It is hard for me to believe that a player does not know their status as far as being a true sophomore or redshirt freshman before the season begins.
Looking for any guidance here. Don't know if there is a way for us to check with the NCAA ourselves to see if there is paperwork actually submitted. But it has become a bit frustrating dealing with this and the thought of him possibly losing out on a year.
