My son (2012) has recieved his first college visit invite.
The invite came in an email, stating that they were inviting around eight Juniors to meet staff and supporting staff, and staying for the football game later in the day. This is a high profile college with great academics. I guess my question is what should we expect and does this show that they are very interested in my son or is this something that schools do just to get players to the campus. I know the coaches whatched him play every game in The WWBA in FT. Myers this fall.

Agree with TR that this sounds like a Junior Day.

What's especially appealing about that particular one is that it's limited to 8 players; virtually assuring the fact that your son will get quality time with the coaches and the program's players who participate.

Unfortunately, some Junior Days are like cattle calls; given the high number of recruits they invite. The most extreme case in our experience was the program that invited 40 players. Family members were involved; so, there were probably 120 participants. It took two chartered motor coaches to take us from place to place on the campus. Yuck.

Congratulations to your son. He's virtually guaranteed to learn a lot about the school and its baseball program, and it'll be a lot of fun.
It's the second part of your question that's the operative one, mood. As long as the school is not paying for the player's and family's travel to and from campus (and certain other associated expenses), it's not a violation. Tickets to sporting events for the player and any immediate family members present are allowed to be given once they're there. The same is true for cross-campus travel (i.e. the motor coaches).

The college invite went well, coaches were terrific about showing us the campus and what is expected from their players. We met with the AD, college acdemic staff and the Alumni president, which on game day at This University was alot to ask of these people. I know they made a great impression on my son, he said "all I would need is an offer and I would commit." I know its early for a 2012 but when do offers start comming out for this class.
Would it be ok to ask the coach the level of interest once invited to Junior day? How would you phrase it? Especially if the school in question is a significant distance away , you probably would like to get an idea of legit interest before considering it. Another thing to consider is the players level of interest in the schoolThx

bsball, glad you had a great time. Was it far away?

The key question/term to ask is if they are "actively recruiting" and it is OK to ask about their expectations and where they see Jr fitting into their program. This may not be true for everyone, but in every case with GUN, they readily shared their recruting plan and where he fit into that plan.

In 2 cases, they even offered their help with future questions and concerns in the process, even after they were no longer on GUN's list.
