Oldslugger, the USA Baseball Jr. Olympics are probably the premier 16 & under tournament in the country every year, with Perfect Game east cobb and a couple others ranking right up there. The JO's are played in Jupiter, FL and Peoria & Surprise, AZ at the same time, with 72 teams playing in each venue.

AAU also holds a Jr. Olympics that includes not only baseball, but about 20 other sports as well, and attracts something like 10,000 athletes each year. They usually have about 44 baseball teams total in their JO. While both tournaments are very competitive, most knowledgeable people think that the USA Jr. Olympics are more competitive and a better venue for players to become "noticed".

USA Baseball uses this tournament to select players as tryout candidates for the US Youth National Team that plays out of the country. The Junior National Team is an 18 & under team that is chosen from a much smaller pool of players invited to play in the Tournament of Stars that is held in Joplin, MO shortly after the Jr. Olympics conclude.

I hope this helps explain what you wanted to know.
